We have operated our business independently for over 20 years, blazing trail on industry firsts including launching the first BPA-free bottle in North America, introducing 90% recycled steel to the drinkware industry and manufacturing all of our products without the use of lead. Our 20th birthday is here! We've been getting after it for two decades and counting. ?? Every day, we pour our hearts into bold action, big adventures, and doing good—by you, the people and planet. Here's a little #TBT history of how we got started??? Back in the early 2000s, the popularity of single-use bottled water was on the rise. Suddenly, everyone seemed to be sipping from single-use plastic bottles as they went about their days. At the time, few people understood the human health risks of plastic or could foresee just how many of those plastic bottles would end up littering the planet. Enter Chico, CA based inventor Robert Seals. Using materials from his local hardware store, Robert prototyped the first reusable stainless steel water bottle in the United States. Unlike its European forerunners, Robert’s bottle was free of aluminum and BPA liners, making it safer and more sustainable. In 2004, Robert founded Klean Kanteen to sell his revolutionary stainless steel water bottles at music festivals, environmental fairs, outdoor recreation events and other gatherings. Soon, sister- and-brother duo Michelle Kalberer and Jeff Cresswell, along with their father Darrel “the Dude” Cresswell, joined Robert to help with backend operations. The family quickly saw the potential to kick-off a worldwide Bring Your Own? revolution and to build a brand that is both a force for good and loved the world over. All Klean Kanteen products are lead free and have been for years. But here's a hot take: This story goes beyond lead. When fast fashion and reusable drinkware products collide, the spirit of #BringYourOwn is lost. Quite simply, sealing insulated bottles with lead free plugs cost more than using lead. In fact, 6-7 times more for us but we choose not to pass that cost on to our customers. When water bottles are turned into fast fashion accessories brands are forced to find the cheapest and quickest ways possible to get product to market. That sometimes means a sacrifice in product safety. ? This is not how we roll. Klean is deliberate in how we bring our products to market because, from the start, our number one goal has been to create the safest and lowest impact products we possibly can.?Safe for workers throughout our supply chain, safe for our end users and safe for the environment. ? It may sound simplistic but the best way to reduce the impact of a product is to keep it in use as long as possible.
