Last week, I had the opportunity to visit Los Angeles and attend Mayor Karen Bass' Innovation in Housing Construction Expo, in partnership with LA4LA.
In addition to showcasing Kit Switch and our work in the Greater Los Angeles Area, we also collectively participated in roundtable discussions facilitated by the Mayor’s Office and City Departments to examine housing requirements, codes, and processes and identify possible changes and improvements. These discussions were incredibly rich, emphasizing the urgency of producing more—and more affordable—housing while diving deep into the barriers and solutions to achieving that goal.
I appreciated the City’s willingness to hear from developers, architects, contractors, and startups like ours. The open dialogue created direct lines of communication between policymakers and industry stakeholders, with a hopeful goal of aligning around outcomes.
We tackled tough questions such as:
- Which standards and guidelines unlock better outcomes, and which are holding us back?
- Why is there hesitation to adopt new technologies in construction, and how can we address that?
While it is true that stakeholders in our industry may experience discomfort around uncertainty or deviations from traditional processes, there was also a great deal of appetite to try new things. A key takeaway was that if a new solution proves to predictably drive cost, schedule, and quality improvements—metrics that Kit Switch is laser-focused on—it can overcome reluctance and spark real enthusiasm.
This also highlighted the importance of funding and resources for pilot opportunities in Los Angeles, to help new companies demonstrate their viability before scaling to larger projects. Events like this remind me that there is a path to change when we work together with a mindset of outcomes, enablement, and collaboration.
Thank you to Mayor Karen Bass, Armeen Neshat, Elizabeth Ben-Ishai, and the entire team for putting together event that prioritized listening and action. I was grateful to have the chance to hear from speakers such as Mayor Emmanuel Estrada, Sarah Dusseault, Cheryl Kisob, Dana Cuff and others. It’s always a pleasure to reconnect with familiar faces in-person, thinking of you Helene Cornell, as well as the inspiring professionals I had the opportunity to exchange with: Michael B. Lehrer, FAIA, Joseph Seager, Kelly Farrell AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, Beatrice Hsu, Steve Glenn, and many more. Your commitment to creating quality, affordable housing despite today’s layered challenges moves me forward.
