Are You Grateful? In the US, we are about to celebrate a day of Thanksgiving.?Sometimes it is not so easy to be grateful. For some of us, there will be some open chairs at the Thanksgiving table – family members who have left us, or who might be too ill to join us – making the day more sad than grateful. I want to remind us of another part of the Thanksgiving story.?It is the part of the story that gets skipped over too quickly and happens before the food is served. The Thanksgiving story starts with people simply coming together.?Imagine a group of very different people coming together in an act of friendship and community.?There were probably many reasons not to come together.?And yet they gathered.??????? Some debate what food was at the original table.?I am not sure that mattered.?What mattered was that people gathered. I am certain that many of those at the original Thanksgiving were carrying burdens, worries, and heavy hearts – and yet they found a way to come together.?I would like to think that the care, kindness, and support they experienced was able to lift them up during a difficult moment in their lives. My request of you.?This Thanksgiving - this holiday season - don’t forget to focus on the acts of togetherness, comfort, and support – especially for those with heavy hearts.?Food is important, but not as important as being present for each other. This Thanksgiving I am thankful - for a day to gather!

We also want to acknowledge that the holidays can be challenging for many. Feelings of sadness, loneliness, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) are more common than we often realize. Happy Vetereans Day! Hope everyone takes time during all the celebrations and fun today to remember the true purpose of the day. From the Veteteans Administration website: "The day is set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty." You may not know but it originated as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of hostilities in World War I. In 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to recognize the sacrifices and service of all American veterans, not just those who died in World War I.

Wearing a "psycho" costume to depict mental illness is not only unimaginative but also perpetuates stigma. Let's strive for more thoughtful and respectful representations this season.

National Coming Out Day is a powerful reminder of the courage it takes to live authentically. It's a celebration of love, identity, and self-acceptance, encouraging everyone to embrace who they are. Whether you’re coming out, already out, or standing in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, today honors the bravery it takes to share your truth. It's a day to show support, foster understanding, and remind people that they are seen, loved, and valued just as they are. At Kirkbride Center we recognize the courageousness of authenticity.
