Can AI detect depression from just 25 seconds of speech? Our new research published in The Annals of Family Medicine confirms that Kintsugi’s voice biomarker AI can identify moderate to severe depression with 71% sensitivity – compared to identification rates of just 47.3% in primary care. With depression affecting 21 million Americans each year, yet often going undiagnosed, this breakthrough could help bridge the gap in mental health screening – especially in primary care settings, where routine screening remains rare. AI-powered tools aren’t meant to replace clinical assessments, but they empower clinicians with real-time, objective insights, helping ensure patients get the support they need, when they need it. With AI as the topic du jour at #vive this week, Fast Company’s Victor Dey explores the evolving role of AI in emotional connection. Grateful to contribute my perspective on how voice AI can support mental health in meaningful ways. As we navigate this space, it’s critical to distinguish between AI as a tool for empowerment versus a replacement for human relationships. Mental health diagnosis and care delivery hasn’t changed much in decades – it still relies heavily on subjective self-reporting, leaving countless patients to slip through the cracks. But what if AI could help change that? In the latest episode of MedTechGurus, host Thomas Hickey sits down with Dr. Prentice Tom, Chief Medical Officer at Kintsugi, to explore how voice biomarker AI is reshaping mental health screening. They discuss: ?? Why traditional mental health assessments are failing patients ?? How voice biomarkers can detect depression and anxiety in new ways ?? How healthcare leaders can address bias and other ethical challenges in AI ?? Why systemic issues – not medical advancements – are the biggest blockers to better care, and how to foster greater innovation to overcome them A must-listen for anyone working in healthcare innovation, AI, or mental health policy. ?? For years, progress toward mental health equity has been slow but steady, with policies like the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act ensuring that depression and anxiety were treated as central to the lives of millions of Americans. But now, with the potential rollback of this landmark policy, we stand on the brink of losing not just health equity – but also a key driver of American productivity. Depression and anxiety cost the global economy $1 trillion annually in lost productivity, according to the World Health Organization. The potential policy changes could have extreme consequences. But employers have the chance to step into a leadership role. Technology can help them bridge this gap by offering solutions that are both cost-effective and transformative. Here’s why this matters right now: ?? Stigma still exists: Despite progress, many employees hesitate to discuss mental health challenges, fearing judgment or repercussions. Employers need to take this into account and give teams the opportunity to seek support anonymously. ?? Prevention is key: Early identification of mental health issues reduces costs and prevents issues from escalating. ?? Objectivity drives access to care: Just as blood pressure monitors provide clear metrics for physical health, innovative technologies can provide objective insights into mental well-being – eliminating bias and ensuring true parity. As we confront the prospect of diminished federal protections for mental health parity, the real question is not whether we can afford to invest in mental health – it’s whether we can afford not to. https://lnkd.in/gBktBv7v

?? A recent Nature Medicine study highlights that GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy could reduce risks of everything from dementia to heart failure. Yet many patients discontinue these treatments within just weeks – well before they experience these benefits. Why? Mental health challenges like depression and anxiety are often hidden barriers to treatment adherence. Making mental health screening a routine part of chronic condition management for diabetes and obesity could: ? Improve mental well-being through timely, appropriate support ? Enhance physical health outcomes, since mental health directly impacts medication adherence AI-powered voice biomarker technology can help bridge this gap by enabling providers to detect signs of mental health struggles early. This ensures patients get the support they need – ultimately improving adherence and helping them realize the full benefits of GLP-1s. https://lnkd.in/einZ7Wyr

?? Kintsugi’s new study on Voice AI is now published in the Annals of Family Medicine! Our peer-reviewed research, conducted in collaboration with UC Berkeley and UAMS, demonstrated that our models can help detect moderate to severe depression with 71.3% sensitivity and 73.5% specificity by analyzing just 25 seconds of free-form speech. With depression screening rates in primary care still below 4%, this technology could be a game-changer for bridging critical gaps in mental health care. ??
