Last June, the Building Division began renovating two historic boarding houses once owned by Lydia Hamilton Smith, confidante to renowned abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens. The buildings are being converted into office space for the Lancaster County Convention Center Authority. Crews are currently on-site finishing drywall, installing flooring and casework, and painting. Additionally, we self-performed all of the doors, frames, hardware, finish carpentry and trim. This project is on track for completion next month.

Sarah Harris, project accountant, has been a valuable member of our team for the past 2.5 years. Based in our Dagsboro, DE office, she plays a key role in managing billing and accounts receivable, handling vendor compliance, tracking project costs and assisting with bid preparation. In addition to her accounting duties, she takes on the role of the "office mom," ensuring the team is well-stocked with supplies and organizes team building activities. Sarah’s career in construction was not something she initially planned. After earning an associate’s degree in business administration with a specialization in marketing management, she sought job opportunities to gain experience. When she came across an opening for an accounting assistant at Kinsley Construction, she applied and soon found herself drawn to the company’s strong sense of community and opportunities for growth. Last year, her dedication and hard work were recognized with a promotion to project accountant. One of Sarah’s favorite aspects of working at Kinsley Construction is the work-life balance. The flexibility of having weekends free, major holidays off and a generous PTO policy allows her to be present for the important moments in her children’s lives. She credits her father for instilling in her a strong work ethic and the importance of education, as well as her mentor, Karen Garthright, for guiding her throughout her career. Sarah encourages young women considering a career in construction to pursue their goals, emphasizing the many opportunities available in the industry. Her advice is to continuously expand your skill set, as the knowledge you gain will help you collaborate effectively across different areas of the business. Thank you, Sarah, for your hard work and the positive impact you bring to our team! We appreciate all that you do.

Our team recently attended the Buttonwood Bridge ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Buttonwood Nature Center in Waynesboro, PA. Guests enjoyed light refreshments, toured the newly renovated headquarters and took a scenic walk along the trails surrounding the bridge. In May 2024, our Highway & Bridge team replaced a three-span masonry bridge with a modern single-span structure. Our work included constructing a temporary stone detour road, replacing a culvert with a 57-by-83-inch arch pipe and completing essential foundational improvements. We’re grateful for the opportunity to support the Buttonwood Nature Center and look forward to the lasting benefits this project will bring to the community!

With 25 years of experience in the construction industry and 1.5 years at Kinsley Construction, Cathy Esworthy brings a wealth of knowledge and a strong passion for site work to every project she oversees. As a project manager, each day brings new challenges, but her primary focus remains the same—ensuring our Site team has the information and support they need to stay productive, efficient and ahead of schedule. Cathy’s journey into construction started in architectural design, but she soon realized she wanted a more hands-on, personalized approach to her work. That realization led her into the world of underground utilities, where she found her niche. After spending most of her career as a site subcontractor, she transitioned to construction management, only to discover that subcontracting was where her heart truly belonged. Having worked with Kinsley Construction for years—both as a subcontractor and an owner’s representative—she knew it was the perfect place to continue her career. Reuniting with longtime colleagues made her transition to Kinsley Construction even more special, as it felt like "coming back to family." When asked about her favorite part of the job, Cathy doesn’t hesitate. It’s the people. From office staff to field crews, she values the relationships she has built over the years. When it comes to her proudest accomplishments, every completed project brings her a deep sense of pride, knowing that she and her team delivered the best possible results while prioritizing safety. For young women considering a career in construction, Cathy’s advice is simple yet powerful; “Know your goal and follow it with confidence and strength. This industry is always evolving, and you’ll never stop learning something new.” Looking ahead, she hopes to continue successfully managing projects while also mentoring the next generation of construction professionals. She credits Jim Barron, former owner of Ronkin Construction, as one of her biggest career influences. He gave her the opportunity to learn about project management through both financial and legal perspectives, an experience that shaped her into who she is today. Thank you, Cathy, for your expertise, leadership and dedication to Kinsley Construction!

Happy Women in Construction Week! This week, we’re celebrating a few of our outstanding female employees who embody our commitment to construction done right. First up, meet Maggie Kelley—an earthwork engineer! Maggie’s journey into the construction industry began with her first computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) class, where she discovered a passion for combining technical skills with real-world impact. Before interviewing with Kinsley Construction, she was familiar with the company’s reputation and achievements. However, what truly solidified her decision to join the team was the welcoming atmosphere and supportive culture she experienced during her onboarding process. From the start, she felt comfortable and valued, knowing she was stepping into a positive work environment. With about seven months on the team, Maggie is responsible for using CADD software to determine the amount of material that needs to be brought in or removed from a job site. She enjoys the variety her role offers, as each day presents new challenges and learning opportunities. One of her proudest achievements has been earning the confidence and respect of her coworkers, which has led to her involvement in several major projects. Maggie encourages women who are interested in the construction industry to follow their passions and not be held back by doubt. She emphasizes that, despite the male-dominated nature of the field, if you're driven to create meaningful projects, you shouldn't let uncertainty hold you back. Looking ahead, Maggie is focused on continuing to grow her skills and striving to be the best version of herself. She is grateful for the support of the entire North East estimating team for helping her navigate the industry and build a strong foundation for her career. We’re proud to have Maggie on the team and excited to see all she will accomplish in the future.

Thank you, ARCO Design/Build, for honoring us as an Elite Project Partner!
Our subcontractors aren’t just partners – they’re the backbone of everything we do. Their skill, dedication, and craftsmanship are what turn plans into reality, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to build alongside them. So earlier this month, our Baltimore and Richmond teams did what any reasonable people would do: host an epic celebration to recognize the rockstars who deliver excellence every day. ?? Cocktails? Naturally. ??? Dinner? Only the best. ?? A dueling piano bar after-party? A well-earned encore. But most importantly, it was a night to honor the best of the best in our industry – the teams whose hard work and expertise make every project a success. Congratulations to our 2024 Awardees! ??
