NEW YORK July 16, 2024 - Dutch drag queen Envy Peru, winner of “Drag Race Holland”, and head judge of “Make Up Your Mind” is entering the United Nations (UN) as one of the first drag queens ever during the 2024 High Level Political Forum (HLPF), a political event where world leaders discuss the UN’s sustainable development goals. “Drag is a form of self-expression and political activism that contributes to diversity and inclusivity and embodies the concept; leave no one behind,” says Envy Peru.
As part of her presence in New York, Envy Peru is hosting the event “A Queer Future of Care.” Along with activists from Armenia, Kenya, Namibia, Nepal, Uganda, and Zimbabwe, they share stories from their lives and dream of an inclusive future. This event is organized by COC Netherlands, UN Women, UNDP, and the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UN. Drag has the capacity to challenge socioeconomic and political narratives. Organizers hope that bringing drag to the UN can be a symbol that reminds us that this world needs a queer future of care.
“I am incredibly proud as a Peruvian/Dutch queen to speak on a global level about my life and how I envision the future as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. There are too many places worldwide where being queer is forbidden and sometimes criminalized. I find that shocking in the year 2024. Being one of the first queens to enter the United Nations is an incredible honor and a highlight of my career. This is a beautiful opportunity to make my voice heard,” says Envy Peru.
