King’s specialist cares for four generations of one family. ? Over the past 30 years, pioneering fetal medicine physician, Professor Kypros Nicolaides, has cared for four generations of women in one family at King’s College Hospital. ? The journey began in the late 1970s when Professor Nicolaides performed an amniocentesis test on Rose Bill to check if her unborn baby might have Down’s syndrome. Since then, he has cared for Rose’s daughter Michelle Lockyer?(who was treated for her son, Jake)?and years later, Michelle's daughter Rhea Eldridge, who was cared for during her pregnancy with her daughter, Isabella. ? When Rhea, 32, became pregnant with her daughter, she received devastating news at her 20 week scan. Her baby, Isabella, was diagnosed with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), a rare condition affecting babies before birth. Professor Nicolaides stepped in once again, offering in-utero surgery to help save Isabella. ? The procedure involved inserting a miniature latex balloon through the wall of Rhea’s uterus, down through her baby’s mouth and positioning it delicately in her windpipe before inflating it. This helps the baby’s lungs to expand and develop. ? Rhea said:?“Professor Kypros Nicolaides has been here for my nan, my mother and now me and little Isabella. He has completely transformed our family, and we are so grateful to him.” ? Professor Kypros Nicolaides said: “Throughout my career, I have worked to make sure we bring forward pioneering advancements in care so that families have the best possible treatment for their babies. The amniocentesis test I helped give Rose and her baby was considered ground-breaking at the time. it is amazing to see how far we have come and how much more we can do to care for Rhea’s generation. ? “It is a privilege to have been able to care for Rose, Michelle, Rhea and little Isabella, and to have played a part in their wonderful family. I am delighted to hear that baby Isabella is doing so well.” ? Read more on our website: https://lnkd.in/e99TY9Nw ? #TeamKing #FetalMedicine

The theme for this year’s #UKDisabilityHistoryMonth is ‘Disability, Livelihood and Employment’ so we're shining a light on the work of Kate Mordey, a speech and language therapist at King’s, who champions support for staff members with disabilities. In recognition of this work, Kate recently won a King’s Inclusion Award in the category of Advancing Disability Inclusion. To highlight Kate’s work, we spoke to Gavin Dean, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Lead and Co-Chair of King’s Able, our staff disability network, he said: “We want everyone who works at King’s to have a positive experience and feel supported in their role. “As well as advocating for support for disabled staff members, Kate has also given up their time to contribute to a new reasonable adjustments guide and toolkit for line managers at King’s. They have also taken part in training for managers, so they have the latest advice on how to support their staff. Without a doubt, by sharing their lived experience, Kate has inspired and encouraged others, helping make sure that every member of Team King’s can do their best at work.” Read more about Kate’s inclusion work, and our staff disability network, King’s Able, on our website: https://lnkd.in/egUEgqd5 #TeamKings #Disability

Patients at King’s are experiencing shorter waits for cancer care as a result of improvements made at the Trust. ? A series of measures introduced at King’s since the start of the year have?helped ensure that fewer patients are now waiting more than 28 days for a cancer diagnosis,?or to have cancer ruled out,?after a referral from their GP.? ? ?? 81% of patients at the Trust were seen?within 28 days in August 2024, which is above NHS England’s target of 75%. ?? Similarly, performance has improved for the number of patients receiving a confirmed cancer diagnosis,?and treatment starting,?within 62 days of being referred to our teams by their GP. ? As a result of these improvements, King’s has also been removed?from NHS England’s cancer tiering programme, which?is for those?Trusts identified as needing the most support to deliver improvements. ? Professor Clive Kay, Chief Executive at the Trust, welcomed the improvements delivered by teams at the Trust: ? “This is really positive news, and is the result of hard work by clinical and operational colleagues across our hospital, as well as support from the partner organisations we work with.” “Providing a high quality, responsive service for patients referred for a cancer diagnosis, or to have cancer ruled out, is vitally important, and we will continue to work hard to improve the service we provide even further.” ? #TeamKings #CancerCare? ?

For #WorldRadiographyDay, we’re celebrating our brilliant radiographers at King’s, whose expertise and dedication play a vital role in diagnosing and treating our patients. Thank you for the essential work you do every day. We’re also thrilled to congratulate Adriana Rey, Dental Radiographer, and Kishar Griffith, Diagnostic Radiographer, on winning The Society and College of Radiographers (SCoR) poster competition! This year, the SoR invited members to design a poster for World Radiography Day around the theme “Radiographers: Seeing the Unseen,” encouraging creative concepts that capture the unique perspective radiographers bring to healthcare. Adriana, creator of The Power of the Unseen poster, said: “I wanted to try and highlight the work we do in dentistry as radiography often focuses on MRIs or CT scans – maxillofacial scans are also a hugely important part of our discipline, so I decided to come up with a poster design in my own time to raise awareness of what we do. “I hadn’t done anything like this before and wasn’t expecting to win, so it came as a nice surprise when I won. The win is not just for me, it is for the whole team here in the Dental Institute, and I’m proud to have my poster shared across the country. I hope it inspires my colleagues to do something similar in the future.” Kishar, creator of The Eyes of Healthcare Radiographers poster, shared: “I have always been into art, and when I saw the call for entries it took me back to my childhood when I would enter poster competitions with my dad. I was gobsmacked to win, I never thought that out of everyone who entered from across the country I would be selected." Congratulations Adriana and Kishar. #TeamKings
