Kinfolk is an augmented reality archive of Black and Brown History

关于我们

Kinfolk is an augmented reality archive of Black and Brown history. Kinfolk exists to recenter the lived histories of marginalized peoples in shared space through the inhabited web of extended reality technologies. We believe that by surfacing and sharing these histories, we can engage and empower our communities to reshape the world. Going forward where we've never collectively been before, Kinfolk is building a world where racial justice and Black and Brown narratives are front and center guiding a deep societal transformation on every level. This transformation is powered by free accessible groundbreaking education of Black and Brown histories and futures.

“For me, repair is de-centering the power structures that currently exist, flipping them on their heads. How do we connect back to that collective vision and that collective action and that collective being to be able to decolonize our values, our actions, our thoughts?”

Kinfolk Tech stands in firm opposition to this blatant erasure and the broader movements for erasure that are currently taking place.?Last year, Kinfolk collaborated with Tourmaline and B. Hawk Snipes to create Mother’s of S.T.A.R., an immersive experience available at the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center dedicated to the leaders on the frontlines of the Stonewall Rebellion. We created this experience with Pride Live to make sure trans voices were unshakable, unmovable, undeniable. We created it as a gift to every queer and/or trans person that never saw themselves. We refuse to let their memory be stolen now. Because this is not just history—it is the blueprint for our collective survival.

The removal of transgender references from the National Park Service’s Stonewall National Monument website is not just an erasure of history—it is an attack. It is an act of institutional violence that echoes the very oppression that led to the uprising at Stonewall in the first place. Let’s be clear: there is no Stonewall without Black and Brown trans women and gender non-conforming people. There is no movement without the defiant, unapologetic resistance of Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Stormé DeLarverie, and the countless other trans folks who put their lives on the line. To erase them is to stand with the police who brutalized them. To erase them is to continue the state violence that sought to control, dehumanize and disappear them. To erase them is to side with the very forces that have always sought to deny trans people their right to exist. This is not just about a website—it is about power. It is about control over the narratives that shape our world. The same systems that criminalized trans people in 1969 are still at work today, now weaponizing history itself to uphold the lie that progress was made without them. Erasure is the final act of violence. It does not always arrive with a club or a gun but with silence, with omission, with the quiet strike of a backspace key. They will say we were never here. They will say the uprising had no architects, no hands that threw bricks, no bodies that bled in the street. But we remember. And memory is a form of resistance. We will not be erased. The question now is not whether they will try to erase us. They already have. The question is: What are we willing to do to stop it?

In 1971, Black Journal explored the role of Black Studies programs as the institutional guardians of a new Black value system born from the struggle for freedom. In this excerpt, Don Warfield, Director of Black Studies at Cali. Poly, and Dr. Milton White, Director of Black Studies at University of Cali., speak on the significance of these programs.

The Mothers of STAR by Tourmaline and B. Hawk Snipes. The Mothers of STAR—Marsha, Sylvia, Stormé, Miss Major, and the countless others who fought, resisted, and nurtured—laid the foundation for the world we will continue to build. Artist statement below: On many occasions Marsha P. Johnson remembered the exact music playing when the raid happened. And for that reason the Stonewall monument I envision starts with the jukebox that called Marsha to the Stonewall dance floor that night. I envision the monument as a spiral that visitors can walk around and witness the story unfold. Out of the jukebox comes a grapevine, filled with lush grapes that upward spiral, at the first cluster is Marsha, then Sylvia Rivera who stayed at the riots for days on end, not sleeping, carried by the revolutionary furor and the feeling of her own power. Although this is a monument for STAR, I would like to have the next turn include Stormé DeLarverie who many witnessed resisting the police not only outside the bar but also inside. Black trans living legend Miss Major who recalls first hand the Stonewall rebellion performed with Stormé in the Jewel Box Revue and vividly remembers being introduced to the West Village and the Stonewall by Stormé, Stormé had a profound impact on Miss Majors’ life trajectory. Miss Major is still alive and I believe she should be represented. In the last cluster of grapes I would like to include a homage to the Women’s House of Detention, specifically the people incarcerated there on the last days of June, early July who participated in the riots by lighting paper and yelling down, many of them were lesbians and gender non conforming people. One spiral monument, a twisty lush grapevine that at times resembles more of an ocean wave spilling out of a dance floor jukebox. At each turn a moment of profound self actualization in the form of care and rebellion. Marsha, then Sylvia then Stormé, Miss Major and the people ushering change from inside the Women’s House of Detention. I believe this represents the landscape that brought forth so much including STAR House and the many beautiful forms of mothering Marsha and Sylvia embodied for decades to come. - Tourmaline This project represents forces in history whose names have been celebrated, untold, uplifted and even erased. This is my gift to every queer &/or trans person that never saw themselves. This is also my gift to my younger self, I now know where I’m going because I know the shoulders I stand on. May this gift continue to heal our past, inspire the present & bless future generations. Asé - B. Hawk Snipes
