On Thursday, Kindness Begins with Me got an email from the Missouri Office of Refugee Administration, confirming that the federal funds we use to support Afghan refugees are frozen. At this time, we are unsure when, or if, the funds in our contract will be released. That means a loss of more than $90,000 -- nearly 60% of our overall budget for 2025. When we started as a volunteer run organization in 2023, we served approximately 120 refugees each week. These funds make this work sustainable. Today, we serve over 200+ refugees each week through English classes, driver's permit classes, driving instruction, women's social groups, and the transportation that allows families to access these programs.
We know our programs serve critical needs for refugee families as they build a new life in St. Louis. We are working as hard as we can to ensure that our mission to build a thriving community with refugee families can continue. To continue this mission, to continue our work, we need to replace the federal funds. Our refugee families are experiencing fear and uncertainty; they, like all of us, are unsure of what is coming next. We have a moral obligation to stand with them by continuing to provide high-quality support.
Please give if you are able - no amount is too small. If you have the capacity to give a larger gift, please reach out directly.
