KinderSmile Foundation (KSF) is proud to partner with Youth Consultation Service (YCS)! Over the last year, YCS and KSF’s Perinatal Health and Wellness Program have been working together to improve the oral and overall health of mothers and infants in our community. Not only do our moms receive education and care, but they are also connected to crucial resources that support their social needs. After seeing the amazing support YCS has provided to our moms and young children, we’re happy to now extend the partnership to the families at KinderSmile Community Oral Health Center Bloomfield, so they too can benefit from YCS’s great resources. Goldman School of Dental Medicine’s Student National Dental Association (SNDA) Chapter, where KinderSmile Foundation hosted a screening of TOOTHACHE: The Painful Truth About Oral Health Care Inequity, our newly produced documentary. An engaging Q & A with dental students and KSF’s CEO and COO followed the screening! We are always excited to speak with students and promote public health dentistry, as we need more providers who are willing to go back and serve the communities that need us most, ultimately helping to bridge the gap in access to oral health care. Yesterday marked 18 years since the unfortunate passing of Deamonte Driver. Deamonte Driver was a 12 year old boy from Prince George's County, Maryland, who passed away in 2007 due to complications from a tooth infection. Despite having symptoms for weeks, his family was unable to find a provider to address it, leading to the infection spreading to his brain. His death highlights the consequences of untreated dental diseases and the lack of access to care for many underserved families. Deamonte’s legacy drives KinderSmile Foundation’s mission. Each day, we work tirelessly to increase access to oral health care for black and brown communities. His passing is a daily reminder that no child should ever suffer, let alone die from a preventable dental problem. At KSF, we are dedicated to sharing his story with as many people as possible with hope that it will spark change within the dental profession, so that every child is able to receive the care they deserve and need. Today, KinderSmile Foundation partnered with Hearts & Homes for Refugees located in Westchester County, New York, extending virtual oral health training to their volunteer staff! When working with refugee families, HHR’s team of volunteers can now provide care more holistically, incorporating oral health into their daily work. Congratulations to the CEO of KinderSmile Foundation, Dr. Nicole McGrath-Barnes on receiving a Joint Legislative Resolution in honor of Black History Month today from Senator Timberlake, Assemblywoman Morales, and Assemblyman Venezia of District 34! Her unwavering dedication to improving access to oral health care for underserved communities in NJ and abroad is truly inspiring. As we all know, Dr. Nicole puts everyone before herself, and treats every child as if they were her own. We are proud to see that her efforts do not go unnoticed!
