When I Started as an Attorney, I Had No Idea What I Was Worth If you’re a new attorney, I get it—it’s overwhelming. Whether you’re setting your hourly rate as a solo or trying to figure out if that first job offer is fair, understanding your value can feel like a mystery. When I started my law firm, I second-guessed everything. Was I charging too much? Too little? Should I just be grateful for?any?offer? Looking back, I realized that understanding your value isn’t just about numbers—it’s about knowing what you bring to the table and having the confidence to own it. Here are a few things I wish someone had told me: 1???Know What Others Are Charging or Earning Your peers are a great benchmark. Research market rates for your practice area and location (NALP, Glassdoor, and Clio’s Legal Trends Report are lifesavers). But remember, your unique value might set you apart. 2???Look at the Full Picture If you’re a solo, your rate needs to cover more than your time—think overhead, taxes, and future growth. And if you’re salaried, track your time anyway. It’s eye-opening to see how much of your day is billable versus administrative. 3???Your Value Is More Than Hours Worked I used to think my worth was tied to how much I worked. It’s not. Your value includes your expertise, your efficiency, and the outcomes you create for clients. Ask yourself: What am I really good at? What makes me different? 4???Negotiate with Confidence Early on, I dreaded talking about money. But here’s the truth: If you know your value, you can confidently negotiate—whether that’s your salary or your fees. Practice these conversations so they feel natural. 5???Invest in Growth Your value will grow as you do. Keep learning, building your network, and investing in tools that make your work easier. Over time, the combination of your experience and relationships will set you apart. If you’re just starting out, give yourself grace. It’s okay not to have all the answers right away. But start paying attention to what you bring to the table—it’s worth more than you think. For all my new attorney friends: What’s been the hardest part of figuring out your value? Let’s talk about it—I’d love to hear your thoughts! #LegalCareer #NewAttorneys #KnowYourWorth #LawPractice

???Are You Struggling to Convert Consultations Into Clients? Let’s Talk About It. When I launched my firm right out of law school, I quickly realized something: ?? Law school doesn’t teach you how to turn consultations into paying clients. It’s not just about knowing the law—it’s about: * Communicating your value, * Managing expectations, and * Building trust in that first meeting. I’ve seen so many attorneys—new and seasoned alike—put in the hard work to get consultations on the calendar, only to watch potential clients walk away. It’s frustrating, disheartening, and sometimes feels like a reflection of your abilities. (Spoiler: It’s not.) Here’s What I’ve Learned From Handling Hundreds of Consultations: ?? A consultation isn’t just about gathering facts—it’s about making a connection. ?? Clients aren’t just hiring an attorney; they’re hiring someone they trust to handle their problem. ?? Small tweaks in your communication—like asking the right questions or framing your services around their needs—can make a massive difference. That’s one of the reasons I started?Kind Counsel Collective. Through mentorship, resources, and community, we tackle the challenges of building a thriving practice—including how to convert consultations into clients. If you’ve ever felt stuck in this area, you’re not alone—and there’s a way forward. ???What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to consultations? Share below—I’d love to hear your thoughts! ??

Proactive communication goes a long way. ??Offer Solutions:?Provide alternative contacts or plans for urgent matters, so clients know they’re still supported. ??Reassure and Reconnect:?Let clients know their needs remain a priority before and after your time away. ???3 Things Every New Attorney Needs to Know About Handling Difficult Clients??? Dealing with difficult clients is a rite of passage for every attorney. It’s not something you can avoid—but it?is?something you can handle with the right mindset and strategies. Here are three lessons I’ve learned from working with clients who tested my patience (and my sanity): 1???Difficult clients aren’t?bad?clients—they’re just frustrated people. Most of the time, a client’s attitude has nothing to do with you and everything to do with the stress they’re under. Listening and showing empathy doesn’t mean you agree with them—it means you’re a professional. 2???Set boundaries early, or they’ll set them for you. One of the best things you can do for both you and your client is to clearly outline expectations right from the start. When everyone understands the process, it helps avoid miscommunications down the line. 3???Each challenge makes you sharper. Handling difficult clients is like building muscle—every tough situation strengthens your skills. These experiences teach you how to stay calm under pressure, communicate effectively, and grow into a more confident advocate. Kind Counsel Collective is a space for new and solo attorneys to share these kinds of lessons, learn from mentors, and support each other. The legal world is tough enough—you don’t have to navigate it alone! What’s been your biggest challenge with a client? I’d love to hear your story—and let’s figure out how to turn it into a win.
