Ralph Teetor was blinded at age 5, a tragedy that could have been profoundly debilitating. Yet, he chose to treat the tragedy as a challenge to overcome and become a prolific inventor. Throughout his life, Teetor’s experience with blindness gave him perspectives on problem-solving that led to not only exemplary work, and a world changing technology. His most famous invention was something he called the Speedostat that is known today as cruise control. The technology uses sensors, radar, or cameras to monitor traffic conditions and adjust a vehicle’s speed accordingly. The innovation both improved driving comfort and, more important, enhanced safety by reducing the risk of rear-end collisions.
