If attention is all you need ?? then Harvey is crushing it. Whatever your stance is on Harvey -- and as I point out in my most recent newsletter, you're pretty much expected to have one -- I think we can all agree that the two year old startup has shined a spotlight on the potential of AI for legal. That's why I told the audience at Legal Innovators UK that startup founders and internal innovators alike should get down on their hands and knees and thank Harvey for putting #legaltech back on the map. For my full take on Harvey and all the Harvey-induced feelings, you'll have to read the full newsletter. Got a Harvey take of your own? Go ahead and drop it in the comments below ?? AI for legal has come a long way in the last two years. If you’ve been sticking your head in the sand, you may be falling behind. I’ve had the honor of speaking at Legal Innovators UK ???? in 2022 and 2023 and I’ll be back again next week November 6-7. Recently, I had a chance to catch up with conference chair Artificial Lawyer himself Richard Tromans and we reflected on some of the old narratives, myths and tropes about lawyers and tech that have been debunked by GenAI. Founder / Consultant / ABA Women of Legal Tech 2024 / Former Penn Carey Law Chief Innovation Officer / Host of PLI's Fast-Tracked Podcast / Penn Adjunct Professor
In a fascinating discussion on the most recent episode of 2030 Vision: AI and the Future of Law, Bridget Mary McCormack shares how she and Zach Abramowitz used AI to reach back in time to imagine how the founder of the American Arbitration Association would think about alternative dispute resolution today. The episode also focuses on judicial usage of generative AI, and we examine the recent concurring opinion out of the Eleventh Circuit in which Judge Newsom used generative AI to determine whether an in-ground trampoline qualifies as "landscaping" for purposes of an insurance dispute. We consider how transparent judges should be when using generative AI today and the future evolution of opinion drafting and material interpretations as AI becomes more commonplace in a judge's chambers. #generativeai #judicialethics #adr #legalinnovation Aaron Tran https://lnkd.in/ekVMG75t

What makes the conference isn’t only the experts on stage, it’s the experts in the audience. After talking this weekend with Jeffrey Franke and Connie Brenton I’ve got serious FOMO about the upcoming “Running Legal Like a Business” conference being produced in partnership by LegalOps.com and LawVision. The conference, which takes place next week September 3-6 at the Fontainebleau Las Vegas, sounds like it’s going to be high quality content that’s been crafted for both experts and rising stars. Some of the savviest industry vets I know are headed to Vegas for this conference — I may just talk myself into attending ?? Great speaking to Zach Abramowitz again on his Podcast. Law firms are starting to experience GenAI malaise.? It's a general market trend and a cautionary tale. https://lnkd.in/gJu3BZ7P According to a survey from Bain, lawyer satisfaction dropped 18 percentage points between October of 2023 and February of 2024. My take is that “GPT Wrappers” are not a good match for professionals with high expectations. I’ve seen this phenomenon before. Back when I was in high school, I worked in a Yamaha/Kawasaki motorcycle dealership. The service guys would only buy and use Snap-On tools. They said it just felt right in their hands. For professionals with really high expectations, the product can’t be close, it’s got to be just right. This is playing out right now with the flurry of wrapper products (and I know they hate this term) that are being adopted by law firms. The capabilities of transformers are amazing, but ultimately it’s a Swiss Army knife and over time (six months according to Bain) it loses its novelty, especially for professionals with high standard for their work product. That’s what you’re seeing in the Bain survey. At LegalMation, we’ve tried to follow the Snap-On ethos: a relentless commitment to being the best and setting the defining standard for professionals. We have worked hard to make sure that when an experienced litigator inputs documents into our platform, the resulting process and the output feels “just right.”? If you’re going to be at International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) ILTACON next week and want to see more than just a bunch of wrappers — if you want to see purpose built applications for professional litigators — stop by our Booth No. 858.

It’s remarkable the level of frustration with CLM as a software category. But the issue is complex because the challenges CLM is designed to solve are real and persistent. So the question is whether CLM as an approach to solving these challenges is outdated. And if so, then how do we approach the challenges in a more effective way? I was honored to moderate a fireside chat about unbundling CLM with Zach Abramowitz and Daniel Lewis. The recording is now available on YouTube for anyone interested. https://lnkd.in/eT6Fy_Ep #CLM #contractmanagement #contracts
