Did you know that 1 in 6 children in the U.S. has a developmental disability, ranging from mild speech delays to more serious conditions like autism spectrum disorder? The reality for these families is often marked by significant challenges and a lack of support. Isolation: A study by the National Autism Association found that 75% of parents of children with autism feel isolated or alone. Discrimination: According to the National Disability Rights Network, 75% of parents of children with disabilities experience discrimination. Financial Strain: Families of children with disabilities spend an average of $17,000 more per year on healthcare and related expenses (Autism Society, 2022). Access Issues: Nearly 1 in 4 families struggle to access necessary services due to long waiting lists, high costs, or lack of local providers (National Center for Education Statistics, 2022). Employment Impact: 49% of parents report that managing their child’s needs impacts their ability to maintain full-time employment, leading to financial strain (Easterseals, 2022). Social Isolation: 44% of parents with children who have disabilities feel socially isolated due to caregiving demands (CDC, 2023). Chasing The Impossible, authored by Rachelle Rutherford, dives deeply into these challenges through personal, real-life stories from families who are living these realities. The book shares their vulnerabilities and the raw, unfiltered experiences of navigating the world of disability. Through these stories, you’ll gain a profound understanding of the struggles and triumphs of these families. Kids on the Move is addressing these issues with an ambitious initiative to create a groundbreaking center where families can access comprehensive care, education, and therapies in one place. This center aims to support children in thriving and to ease the burdens on their families. By pre-ordering Chasing The Impossible, you’re not only learning about these impactful stories but also contributing to a crucial cause.
