Every 100 minutes, a man or woman goes to work, never returning home to their families and loved ones. It means that every day a child’s life is forever changed. Along with the grief of losing a parent or the stress of caring for an injured parent, the children of these injured workers can no longer count on that parent’s income, and the likelihood that they can afford a college education decreases significantly. Kids’ Chance is bridging that gap by providing scholarships and support to the children of workers who have been injured on the job. They maintain the contact information so when the time comes to consider higher education options, they can reach out and connect these kids with the appropriate Kids' Chance state organization. Inspiring and grateful for sharing your journey
If I had an opportunity to go back and hug my 4-year-old self and tell her how much, and in how many ways, the workers compensation community would change the trajectory of her life, I absolutely would. That is, in part, because she would think 24-year-old me is so cool--but more importantly, because though she may not have been able to comprehend it at the time, I know she would eventually get to experience it. In the spirit of gratitude, I wanted to share my most recent professional experience and what I now consider to be my “epiphany” moment. A few months ago, I was invited by Kids’ Chance of Nebraska (KCNE) to attend a Workers’ Compensation Symposium in Lincoln, NE. At the conference last Thursday, I had the absolute honor of being their guest speaker and was given the opportunity to share my experience as a scholarship alumna of Kids’ Chance of PA and an inaugural national ambassador for Kids Chance of America, as well as tell their audience my personal story and initial exposure to the workers' comp community following my father’s work injury, subsequent opioid addiction, and eventually his fatal overdose. To say that I am grateful to be in this position is an understatement. The impact that the worker’s compensation community has had on me—both professionally and personally—is indescribable. I want to extend my deepest appreciation to the board of KCNE for their hospitality, support, and unwavering dedication to the mission of our organization. I also encourage everyone who reads this post to learn more about Kids’ Chance and help spread the word about the scholarship opportunities that are available to students in all 50 states, so that more people can benefit from the educational funds, mentorship, opportunity, and love that exist within this community.
