We educate affected communities about kidney disease while fighting for inclusive and equitable access to care.

关于我们

The Kidney Champion Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of historically marginalized and underserved communities of people at risk for or living with kidney disease. Our goal is to uplift their voices and provide them with the resources and support they need to take their lives back from kidney disease for a healthy quality of life. We do this by educating them about the disease while advocating for inclusive, and equitable access to care. Our vision is to create a world where all individuals living with kidney disease have the support and resources they need to live fulfilling and healthy lives. We achieve this through advocacy, education, and empowering our community of kidney warriors to celebrate and embrace their unique journeys. Guided by our values of compassion, inclusivity, and determination, we work towards a future where kidney disease is no longer a barrier to living a full and meaningful life.

Had an incredible time at of Hope ATL's Wellness Wednesday event in Decatur, GA! Each week, the community is invited to a free exercise class, followed by a wellness speaker and a complimentary lunch, thanks to the support of AARP. I had the pleasure of speaking about kidney disease—what causes it, how to prevent it, and what to do if you're diagnosed. The audience was so engaged, asking great questions that made me feel like I was really making a difference. A special thanks to @Ardelyx for sponsoring my talk, and to the American Kidney Fund for creating the Kidney Health Coach program, which makes opportunities like this possible. I’ve done many talks on kidney disease, but each one is unique, and the enthusiasm I encounter never gets old! If you'd like me to speak at your church, corporation, or community center, feel free to send me a message. I'd love to connect with you! #HouseofHopeATL #WellnessWednesday #KidneyHealth #CommunityWellness #PublicHealth #HealthEducation #AARP Sherice Shine-Cross, LPC, NCC

I’ve struggled with kidney disease since I was 14 years old and the National Kidney Foundation has helped me navigate my journey. I?walk because too many families (like mine) are coping with this devastating chronic illness, and thousands more will face an unexpected kidney disease diagnosis in the year to come. I walk to support the lifechanging work of the National Kidney Foundation: ???- To ensure that families will have a place to turn when they need answers. ???- To keep up the fight for policy changes to protect kidney patients and living donors. ???- To drive innovation in transplantation and get more loved ones off the kidney transplant waitlist. Are you with me? Please consider supporting my efforts with a generous donation.? Also, if you would like to walk with my team, please let me know. Thx! ??

I had such a good time at Ebenezer Baptist Chruch’s Community Fair today! There were so many great vendors, free haircuts for kids, food, and so much more. The highlight for me was meeting Reverend Raphael Warnock for U.S. Senate once again. ???? The Community Health Fair occurs the 1st Saturday of each month at the MLK Education Building. ?? A huge thank you to Maurice Madden from NephCure and Valencia C. Fleming for always being so kind to me. And to Dr. Odioemene, who was there for FREE APOL-1 testing, for imparting so much knowledge on me. We talked about everything from why genetic testing for kidney disease is not recommended post transplant to what sports to put our sons in. Haha. Also, he’s a Nephrologist right in my neighborhood and good friends with my doctor. Also, if you are African American and have kidney disease in your family or have kidney disease yourself but haven’t had a transplant yet, I highly recommend getting the APOL-1 test. This test will let you know if you have the gene for kidney disease. Many African Americans have this gene but we didn’t know it even existed until recent years. It’s a new discovery and can unlock the key to you avoiding getting kidney disease or the disease progressing if you already have it. Please reach out to NephCure for more info on this!

Tips for Advocating for Yourself: 1. Educate Yourself: Learn about your condition and treatment options. Reliable sources like medical websites, support groups, and healthcare providers can provide valuable information. 2. Ask Questions: Don’t hesitate to ask your healthcare provider questions about your diagnosis, treatment plan, and any tests they recommend. Understanding your care is crucial. 3. Be Prepared: Before appointments, write down any symptoms, concerns, and questions you have. Bring a list of medications you’re taking, including dosages. 4. Speak Up: If something doesn’t feel right or you don’t understand what’s happening, voice your concerns. Trust your instincts about your own body. 5. Get a Second Opinion: If you’re unsure about a diagnosis or treatment plan, it’s okay to seek a second opinion from another healthcare provider. 6. Keep Records: Maintain a personal health record with your medical history, test results, and medications. This can help you and your healthcare providers make informed decisions. 7. Bring Support: Take a friend or family member to appointments. They can provide support, help remember information, and ask questions you might not think of. 8. Know Your Rights: Be aware of your rights as a patient, including the right to receive clear information about your health and the right to make informed decisions about your care. 9. Be Persistent: If you’re not getting the answers or care you need, keep asking questions, seek additional help, or consider changing healthcare providers. 10. Use Patient Advocates: Many hospitals and healthcare systems have patient advocates who can help navigate complex medical situations and ensure your concerns are addressed. By following these tips, you can become a more empowered and effective advocate for your own health and well-being. #HealthAdvocacy?#PatientPower?#KnowYourRights#KidneyHealth?#KidneyDisease

Better late than never! Last year during National Transplant Week, I created this video to raise awareness about kidney transplants. Even though Transplant Week was a month ago, the message is still so important. National Transplant Week is all about celebrating the gift of life through organ donation, honoring donors and their families, and spreading awareness about the critical need for organ donors. Did you know that one organ donor can save 8 lives and enhance over 75 more? Your generosity will have a ripple effect, touching not just the recipient but their family and friends. Getting the call that I had a match for a new kidney was one of the most exciting times of my life. I encourage everyone to consider becoming an organ donor. Take a moment to register and then let your decision be known. Watch this video to learn more about the importance of kidney transplants and how they save lives. ?? #TransplantWeek #KidneyTransplant #Awareness #ChronicIllness #OrganDonation #KidneyDisease

Did you know that after a kidney transplant, it’s crucial to see a dermatologist every year for a skin cancer screening? ?? Transplant recipients are at a higher risk for skin cancer due to immunosuppressive medications. These medications help prevent organ rejection but also reduce your skin’s ability to protect against harmful UV rays. ?? Regular dermatologist visits can help catch any issues early, ensuring you stay healthy and cancer-free. So, mark your calendar and make that appointment—it could save your life! ?? ?? Please see my previous post about how applying sunscreen every hour can help prevent skin cancer. #KidneyTransplant #SkinCancerAwareness #HealthTips #TransplantLife

After a kidney transplant, protecting your skin from the sun is more crucial than ever! ?? Transplant recipients are at a higher risk for skin cancer due to immunosuppressive medications. Make sunscreen a daily habit to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Remember to reapply every two hours and seek shade whenever possible. Your health is worth it! ?? #KidneyTransplant #SkinCare #SunSafety #TransplantLife #KidneyDisease

Hey y’all, I just had an eye-opening call with my insurance company that I had to share! If you’re struggling with kidney disease, this could be life-changing. Did you know some insurance plans, like Aetna, offer a Home Health Aid program? They cover professionals to help with light housekeeping, meal prep, and personal care—all covered by insurance! This would have been so helpful during my dialysis days. Not all plans offer this, but it’s worth asking your insurance provider. Talk to your primary care doctor for a referral, and if your insurance doesn’t cover it, check with your local social services for help. Remember, you’re not alone. There are services to support you through kidney failure, dialysis, or transplant. You deserve all the help you can get! ?? #KidneyDisease #HomeHealthAid #Support #KidneyTransplant #SocialServices
