This past weekend student volunteers and dancers completed the 52nd year of Penn State University’s Dance Marathon (THON) which is the largest student run philanthropy in the world. All proceeds benefit Four Diamonds at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital who help to ensure that no family ever faces cancer alone. THON not only provides financial support for pediatric cancer treatment and research, but also fosters a sense of community, hope, and inspiration. It’s more than a dance—it's a movement of students, alumni, and supporters united #ForTheKids! This year KDL had the opportunity to have more direct involvement via Eric E.'s nephew Jake Heckman who participated as a dancer this year. Jake and his friend Andrew stayed up and on their feet for 46 hours and raised $14K towards a new record total of $17,737,040! This was over $700K more than last year's record. Some first hand take aways from our team's attendance of SMC3's Jump Start conference in Atlanta. These items were identified by KDL as the most important coming from discussions with numerous carriers partners attending the event. 1?? NMFTA Updates - Concerns were raised about how this brings us a step closer to requiring dimensional data in the LTL industry and the preparedness of shippers. They aren’t getting DIMS or NMFC codes from many shippers and will need to start increasing the number of orders put through dimensionalizers.?Some are doing as much as 80% of shipments – others still only doing 20-30%.?? - KDL received compliments for being ahead of our peers in understanding how these changes will impact our customers and working with the carriers on those challenges. 2?? EBOLs - Carriers are looking to eliminate manual entry from their workflow, with BOL-to-invoice entry being a prime target. - KDL has already built out EBOL APIs for several carriers and is now working on integrations for those adopting the Digital Council's standard. 3?? Artificial Intelligence - Nearly every carrier is engaging with AI in some capacity as the technology continues to evolve. 4?? Soft Start to the year - Most carriers are reporting volumes down around 10% and are trying to fill this empty space by being aggressive on spot quotes for larger orders. 5?? Latest Updates on the ILA Port Strike: 1. Former President Trump has twice reiterated his support for the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) in the past week, emphasizing that employers should prioritize hiring American workers rather than laying them off and sending profits overseas. 2. A prolonged strike poses a significant risk to the economy. Currently, there are no indications that Trump would invoke the Taft-Hartley Act to address the situation. 3. Contract negotiations have been stalled since early November. The USMX argues that technological advancements are urgently needed at the ports, while the ILA contends that automation threatens its members' jobs. 4. A coalition of 267 trade associations has endorsed a letter urging the ILA and USMX to reach a resolution before the January 15 deadline. 5. The proposed 62% pay increase will be voided if the parties fail to agree on a new master contract by January 15. Shippers, wary of the potential strike and the tariffs proposed by President-Elect Trump, have been frontloading orders for months—an approach KDL has strongly recommended since October. How long those stockpiles will hold supply chains together will be dependent on the length of the strike. 2025 is shaping up to start off on a turbulent note for logistics folks.
