Anti-ICP is an underrated tool. 99% of companies have an ICP, but few take the Anti-ICP definition seriously. Inversion creates clarity. Study the worst accounts to help you focus your attention on the best accounts. This kind of analysis shows contrast. That contrast can then be used to: — Find patterns between best and worst.? — Identify negative signals.? — Clarify ICP definitions. There are a few ways to get there. 1.) DQ’d leads Your DQ’d leads are the simplest way to find your anti-ICP.? The key here is to *exclude* timing reasons and focus on fit reasons.? Accounts that die before becoming an opportunity are usually the best place to start. 2.) Ask your AEs a simple question: “Which accounts in your territory do you think are unwinnable?” There may be personal bias here, but the AE sniff test can tell you a lot in aggregate. 3.) Ask CS for “false start” customers.? Are there accounts that you sold, but never saw value? Which renewals were dead on arrival? Churn in itself can be noisy — good fit customers can churn for a variety of reasons. But if they never deployed, or never got value, or never integrated, then you may have actually sold an anti-ICP account. In the analysis you want to go beyond basic firmographics. It might be obvious that companies with less than NN employees in XYZ industry or geo are a poor fit. But what are the anti-ICP patterns within your serviceable market? Those are the gold nuggets that drive focus. And once you find the patterns, you can get everyone looking for them BEFORE you spend time on the wrong accounts.
