Though proposed cuts to childcare funding in Maine have received OVERWHELMING opposition from the public, the current word we're receiving is that the Maine State legislature might still pass the proposed cuts tomorrow or later this week. Last week, I released a special episode of my podcast with Maine Association for the Education of Young Children discussing the impact any cuts to childcare funding would have. You can listen to it here: https://lnkd.in/eM62YGya In case you don't have time to listen, here's a simple breakdown: (1) Childcare educators are paid in the lowest 3% of wage earners across the nation, making it hard to attract and retain highly qualified and talented teachers. (2) If the Maine legislature cuts childcare funding, childcare educators across Maine would lose an average of $2,000/year from their income. (3) With that pay cut, educators will leave the field. (4) Without educators in classrooms, fewer spots in childcare facilities will be available. (5) With fewer spots available, fewer children and families can access care. (6) When families can't access care, they can't go to work. This makes it hard for them to pay their bills and save for retirement. (7) When families can't go to work, fewer workers are available for other workplaces and industries to hire. That means fewer firefighters, fewer nurses, fewer bank tellers, fewer grocery store cashiers, fewer everything. Childcare educators are the workforce BEHIND every other workforce. Without us, children, families, and the economy suffer. Cutting funding now would further destabilize and exacerbate the childcare crisis in Maine. Write to your local representatives ASAP to tell them that you OPPOSE any cuts to childcare funding in the State budget. Tell them what losing childcare would mean to you and your family. Tell them what it would mean for your community. #NoCutsToChildCare #NoCutsToChildCareMaine

I’m hiring! I am so proud that in my first year at Ketcha, I’ve been able to double the size of the program so that more children can access high-quality, outdoor learning opportunities. We will be expanding to have an additional classroom next school year, which is why we are searching for experienced, passionate outdoor educators to join our team. If you join the teaching team here, you will get the chance to make a difference in students’ lives by leading enriching, outdoor learning experiences, rooted in the Reggio Emilia approach. You will get to teach and play outside all day, year-round, experiencing all the transformative benefits that time in nature has to offer. I’m looking for: Lead teachers AND assistant teachers. I have both seasonal and year-round positions available, as well as both full-time and part-time schedules. You can learn more about the positions available here: https://lnkd.in/eHQQhHva or you can send me a message!

Governor Mills' 2026-2027 biennial budget proposes significant cuts to childcare funding. Disappointingly, there is around $20 million in proposed cuts to childcare funding annually. The most significant cuts are to the Child Care Worker Salary Supplement program, which started during the pandemic. Last year, the Legislature made a crucial decision to double the program's funding, recognizing the value of childcare workers and their essential role in supporting families and businesses. Childcare workers, like the staff at our Ketcha Outdoors preschool and afterschool programs, are the workforce behind the workforce. Reverting to previous funding levels is a step backward that would diminish the support these educators need to stay in the field so that they can provide care to your children. We cannot afford to go back to inadequate funding — we must continue to invest in these essential workers for the future of our children and communities. What can you do to help keep this vital funding for childcare in the budget? Contact your State representative and tell them that you oppose the cuts to childcare funding that have been proposed in the budget. You can learn more about the proposed cuts and find a template of what to say or write to your representative by clicking the link in our bio. Link:? https://lnkd.in/ehTHqhD4
