STARSHIP'S EIGHTH LAUNCH The eighth flight test of?Starship?is preparing to launch Monday, March 3 from Starbase in Texas. The one hour launch window opens at 5:30 p.m. CT. A live webcast of the flight test will begin about 40 minutes before liftoff, which you can watch?on X @SpaceX?or on?spacex.com.?You can also watch the webcast on the X TV app. The upcoming flight will target objectives not reached on the previous test, including Starship’s first payload deployment and multiple reentry experiments geared towards returning the upper stage to the launch site for catch. The flight also includes the launch, return, and catch of the Super Heavy booster. Extensive upgrades to Starship’s upper stage debuted on?the previous flight test,?focused on adding reliability and performance across all phases of flight. Starship’s forward flaps have been upgraded to significantly reduce their exposure to reentry heating while simplifying the underlying mechanisms and protective tiling. Redesigns to the propulsion system, including a 25 percent increase in propellant volume over previous generations, add additional vehicle performance and the ability to fly longer duration missions. And the vehicle’s avionics underwent a complete redesign, adding additional capability and redundancy for increasingly complex missions like propellant transfer and ship return to the launch site. Join Prof. Pascal Lee on Tuesday, February 11 · 5:30 - 7pm EST and learn about humanity's journey back to the Moon! Establishing a fixed base on the Moon at a high southern latitude but off-polar site, with a versatile mobility system for surface and point-to-point transportation, would far more optimally serve the United States’ science, exploration, and strategic interests on the Moon than the series of sortie missions to the lunar south polar regions currently planned in the Artemis program. In an ongoing search for candidate sites to establish a lunar base, Clavius crater is emerging as an intriguing option. It offers unique and exciting geology spanning almost the entire history of the Moon, and relatively easy access to many other sites of interest including the lunar South Pole. Beyond Clavius’ exceptional inherent value, a “Clavius Base”, first depicted in the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”, could also serve as a public engaging case of reality meeting fiction. A MOON BASE AT CLAVIUS Am giving another public talk at the amazing IHMC on Tue, Feb 11, 2025, 5:30pm EST, this time at their Ocala, FL facility. Talk is free but registration is required: https://t.ly/SFE8j . Talk will also be recorded & shared on YouTube afterwards. Abstract: Establishing a fixed base on the Moon at a high southern latitude but off-polar site, with a versatile mobility system for surface and point-to-point transportation, would far more optimally serve the United States’ science, exploration, commercial, and strategic interests on the Moon than the series of sortie missions to the lunar south polar regions currently planned in the Artemis program. In an ongoing search for candidate sites to establish a lunar base, Clavius crater is emerging as an intriguing option. It offers much greater safety, logistical reliability, operational flexibility, and scientific reach for long term lunar exploration and potential ISRU development than any south polar site. Clavius itself offers unique and exciting geology spanning almost the entire history of the Moon, as well as trafficable routes to many other sites of interest including the lunar South Pole. Beyond Clavius’ exceptional value, a base at Clavius, first depicted in the iconic movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”, could also serve as a public engaging case of reality meeting fiction.
