As we celebrate International Women’s Day 2025 tomorrow under the theme “Accelerate Action,” the Kenya Red Cross reflects on 60 years of driving change for women in marginalized communities. In Garissa, our team, alongside Zeitun Aden Maalim, Ag. Director of Gender, Culture & Social Services, visited Garissa Women Prison to mark the day with the incredible women there. The celebration was filled with inspiring performances; dance, skits, and poetry, showcasing hope. KRCS has long championed women’s empowerment through Mental Health & Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Gender-Based Violence (GBV) response, and grassroots pathways to economic and social reintegration. To support the women in prison, Kenya Red Cross provided dignity kits, hygiene supplies, and refreshments. For 60 years, we have been investing in women. Now, we must accelerate action to create lasting impact.

“Kenya is on track to achieving the 95-95-95 HIV targets, a milestone that reflects our country's commitment to ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. However, despite these advancements, stigma and discrimination remain formidable barriers that continue to undermine our progress." – Miriam Ngure, (MPH), Head of Kenya Red Cross Global Fund Programme. On March 3rd, the Kenya Red Cross participated in the launch of the People Living with HIV Stigma Index 2.0: Kenya Assessment Report 2024, which highlights persistent HIV-related stigma and discrimination—a major barrier to ending HIV/AIDS. Marking 40 years since Kenya’s first confirmed HIV case, the report reveals that stigma remains deeply rooted across families, communities, workplaces and policies. Some key findings include: ? 73.5% of participants found it difficult to disclose their HIV status. ? 71.3% hid their HIV status due to fear of stigma. ? 68.4% hesitated to take an HIV test due to fear of negative reactions. ? 39.4% missed or stopped HIV treatment due to fear of exposure. ? 48.4% experienced human rights abuses. HIV-related stigma continues to hinder prevention, treatment and care efforts, denying people living with HIV (PLHIV) their fundamental rights. To make progress, Kenya must increase uptake of HIV services and actively eliminate stigma in healthcare and communities. The Kenya Red Cross remains committed to inclusive, stigma-free healthcare and strengthening awareness to end HIV-related discrimination.

The Kenya Red Cross continues to support the Todonyang community with Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services following the tragic Lake Turkana attacks on 22nd February. We have set up an information center for families of missing persons and, alongside the Kenya Coast Guard, are actively involved in search and recovery efforts, including deploying an additional boat. We are also working with the Ethiopian Red Cross to reunite families through Restoring Family Links services.

More than 22 fires in a single week—our teams have been on the ground, responding and supporting affected communities. The latest, in Mathare-Mabatini, has now been contained. These fires have affected 42 households, 48 businesses, two schools and an unknown acreage of land, leaving 20 injured. Kenya Red Cross continues to provide mental health and psychosocial support, first aid and evacuation of the injured, working alongside National and County Government teams.

H.E. Arnaud Suquet, the French Ambassador to Kenya, visited Simbi Kogembo Dispensary in Homa Bay alongside county government officials and UNICEF representatives to assess the impact of the French Embassy-funded Nutrition Recovery and Resilience Project, implemented by UNICEF Kenya in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross. The funding supports nutrition resilience among communities vulnerable to floods by rolling out the Baby-Friendly Community Initiative in Homa Bay, Migori, Kisumu and Busia counties. This initiative is integrated with Early Childhood Development activities in 40 centers across the four counties. Additionally, the project extends to Garissa, Tana River, Nairobi and Mombasa, where the focus is on scaling up community-level surveillance for acute malnutrition.
