?? Over the last few weeks, the inequalities within the development ecosystem have made themselves felt. In Kenya, where we are based, recently re-elected US President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s decision to suspend USAID assistance with immediate effect has left a huge number of the more than 1.2 million people living with HIV asking health workers and health educators : “What will happen to us?”. At the same time, the Global Gag Rule has been reinstated. Once again, groups receiving US foreign aid assistance have been banned from engaging in legal abortion advocacy, service provision and counselling. The intended result is to force advocates and health workers to abandon the many people who want and need the lifesaving healthcare that is safe abortion access. ?? In response, social justice movements have to collectively generate narratives of hope and solidarity. ?? Our VELMA research program, in collaboration with Komons, Global Narrative Hive, and Puentes, brings together 5 brilliant researchers from Kenya’s SRHR, feminist, and LGBTQ+ movements to explore this question. Alvin has collaborated with Kenya Comms Hub on campaigns such as Access to Safe & Legal Abortion and Sexuality Education, bringing stories to life through art that resonates and educates. Here’s what Alvin had to say about his work and experience: ??? On collaborating with KCH: "I enjoyed the creative freedom to design characters and express myself while making an impact. I learned about the challenges women face, the high costs of unsafe abortions, and the laws around it. These insights and the design strategies I developed wouldn’t have been possible without KCH’s collaboration and research." ?? On the importance of narrative change: "Narrative change challenges stereotypes, combats harmful narratives, and serves as a catalyst for social change."
