Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. These are the four “hs” of the youth organization formed in 1912 that is known as 4-H. Although many Americans are aware of 4-H, or perhaps have been a member at some point in time, few realize its international dimensions. Listen to today's new episode with a research fellow who is examining the links between Kentucky and Japan through agricultural extension programs such as 4-H. https://lnkd.in/eve4Ykeu William C. Sack is a PhD Candidate in history at Harvard University. He holds an A.B. from Harvard and recently had an article accepted in Past & Present. He has been funded by institutions in South Korea, Japan, and the United States. He is currently working on a project that deals with Kentucky entitled: “A Little Patch of Kentucky in Yamanashi: 4-H and Transpacific Agricultural Extension in Japan (1938-1979).” For his research, William Sack focused on the Darrell A. Posey collection (MSS 245). This collection has not yet been digitized, but researchers can explore the collection in the KHS Research Library.” https://lnkd.in/eEFeUD97 He also consulted the Bath County Oral History Project. https://lnkd.in/eUSMuyZs The interview with Tera Lee Rawlings was particularly helpful for his project on 4-H. https://lnkd.in/eQ8Nn_qE

Our curators have installed a few new textiles in our main gallery. This fashionable blue suit was made by Nell Vaughn, in Lexington. Vaughn picked out the pattern, based on a design by Pierre Cardin, and the material. "Vogue Paris Original" tag is sewn into the jacket. This collection was worn by Nell Blair Vaughn when she worked for the Lexington Herald-Leader. https://ow.ly/jxnn50Ts7r9 The second dress was part of a donation from Isabelle P. Walker. Correspondence from the donor suggests the clothing belonged to her mother, Annie Pence Walker (1880-1951). Born in Lincoln County, Annie married Walter Owsley Walker (1879-1955) in 1904 at the home of her parents in Stanford. Census records indicate the couple made their home in Lincoln County where Walter was a farmer. The couple had five children. https://ow.ly/KAfR50Ts7r6
