As an agency of the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet, the Kentucky Heritage Council serves as the State Historic Preservation Office, dedicated to the identification, protection, and preservation of Kentucky's rich heritage. Our mission is integral to making communities more livable, and our work has a far-reaching impact. ??? Historic Preservation: We locate, survey, and document historic buildings and sites, ensuring their protection and preservation for future generations. We also make nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. ?? Rehabilitation Tax Credits: We administer federal and state historic rehabilitation tax credit programs, encouraging the revitalization and reuse of historic properties. ?? Archaeological Research & Education: We conduct archaeological research & educational programs, helping understand Kentucky's prehistoric and historic past. ??? Section 106: We review the impacts of federal projects in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, safeguarding our cultural resources. ??? Preservation Education and Planning: We work closely with local governments and preservation commissions, providing education and planning assistance to promote sustainable heritage preservation. ?? Certified Local Government Program: In collaboration with the National Park Service, we administer the CLG Program, empowering local communities to protect & celebrate their historic resources. ?? Kentucky Main Street Program: We manage the Kentucky Main Street Program, supporting downtown revitalization efforts and fostering economic development. ?? Supporting Commissions: We provide administrative support to the Kentucky African American Heritage Commission, Martin Luther King JR. Commission, Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission and Kentucky Military Heritage Commission. Kentucky's historic places are as diverse as its citizens weaving together a tapestry of stories that shape our collective identity.

We are currently accepting applications for ACHP summer internships. Are you interested in exploring preservation-related careers and developing professional skills while advancing the sustainable use of our nation’s historic resources? Intern with the ACHP! Interns make significant contributions to the ACHP’s work while gaining valuable experience and insight into the national preservation program. The internship is 10-weeks, full-time, and paid, and are available to undergraduate or graduate students. Internships may be virtual, on-site in Washington, D.C., or hybrid.
