KVCAP is celebrating 60 years! The year was 1965. The first American combat troops entered Vietnam. Martin Luther King Jr. led 3,200 Civil rights activists in the third march from Selma, Alabama, to the capitol in Montgomery. Columbia Records released Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” and the Beatles performed the first stadium concert in the history of rock, in New York City. Lyndon Johnson was also beginning his first full term as President of the United States, and he pledged to continue his “War on Poverty” in response to the high national poverty rate of 19%. President Johnson’s Economic Opportunity Act, signed into law in 1964, authorized the formation of Community Action Agencies (CAAs) across the county, to address the barriers to economic stability at the local level. In Central Maine, a Board of Directors was organized as the Northern Kennebec Valley Community Action Council, which would eventually become the Kennebec Valley Community Action Agency. Articles of incorporation were certified on July 13, 1965, 501c3 non-profit status was approved on November 2, and Raymond Richard was hired as the first Executive Director the following year. Today KVCAP is celebrating 60 years of helping people and changing lives! We are proud to be the CAA serving Kennebec and Somerset counties, and of the countless individuals and families we have helped to become and remain financially stable. We will be celebrating our anniversary throughout the year and will share information about upcoming activities and events in this newsletter, on our website, and through social media!
