The digital advertising space was built on third-party cookies that track users as they hopscotch across the web--but privacy controls have made them a less reliable marketing tool. So what's the future hold for consumers and advertisers in a world without third-party cookies? And how should brands think about reaching audiences in this new digital landscape? After analyzing tens of millions of research papers, Kellogg researchers Dashun Wang and Jian Gao found that artificial intelligence has the potential to benefit nearly every single scientific discipline (albeit not uniformly). However, the researchers also found that scientists in most disciplines lack the skills and training to use AI correctly. AI isn’t Magic - It’s Hard Work. Like previous technologies, we need to apply the technology in a way that desirable (to people), feasible (in siloed organizations), and viable (has clear returns). And to achieve this, we need to use an iterative design process engaging a broad set of stakeholders - not just the people who have something to gain. How likely are people to bounce back from setbacks? What are the chances that a law student who fails the bar exam will pass a retest? Our recent research suggests it's less likely than many think. Law students who failed the bar exam were less likely to pass a re-test than people believed, just as those facing health challenges were less likely to make lifestyle changes to improve their health than estimated. Critically, correcting misconceptions about resilience increased?support for rehabilitative initiatives aimed at helping struggling populations. What is the best way to motivate employees not only to work hard … but also take the kinds of risks that could really move the needle for an organization? That question was the launching pad for new research by Jeroen Swinkels, a professor of management and strategy at Kellogg. Through mathematical modeling and analysis, Swinkels found that an ideal approach favors rewarding high-value results in grand fashion, while also being gracious with failure. “The way you get people to work hard is by having big payoffs for big outcomes,” Swinkels says. Be sure to reward your team handsomely for breakthroughs. But! You should show leniency in cases of failure. “Firms that are also good at managing the failure process so that it is graceful and survivable, and good at taking advantage of the projects that then succeed, are firms that are going to thrive” says Swinkels. New research reveals how the language we use reflects deep-rooted biases, especially at the intersection of gender, race, and class. A new tool developed by Tessa Charlesworth, Kshitish Ghate, and Mahzarin Banaji analyzes 840 billion words to uncover stereotypes about historically powerful groups and overlooked communities. Surprisingly, the analysis shows that wealth plays a key role in how positively or negatively these groups are described. As AI and language models become more integrated into daily life, understanding how these biases are embedded is critical for building fairer systems.
