Kelley’s Retail Workshop, overseen by Director Dana Olsen, offers students deep immersion into the corporate retail industry and highlights the potential career choices for future retail professionals. Students get to meet face-to-face with recruiters and senior leaders from these companies and more to learn about industry practices and life as an assistant buyer, merchandise planner, or merchandise analyst, the three most common entry-level jobs in the industry. The workshop has close ties with many retailers like Macy’s, The Home Depot, American Eagle Outfitters, and Meijer who partner with Kelley faculty to create interesting learning opportunities and help students prepare for careers in retail.

?? Retail Workshop New York Trip ?? Last Thursday, students had the exciting opportunity to visit David Yurman, PVH Corp., Macy's, SPARC Group LLC, and the American Eagle Outfitters Inc. gateway store in New York City! ??At David Yurman, students learned about the history of the brand and engaged with a panel including Lauren Wong, Kerry Masucci, Victoria Rendine, MBA, Haleigh Levethan, Richard Annan, Meredith Kristufek, Brooke Motta, and Arianna Marciano. ??At PVH, Ramses A. Ovalles and Rachael Flores introduced students to the brand. They then engaged in a panel discussion with Michele Giffen-Lee, Lisa Konskier, Hannah Luby, and Olivia F. focusing on the brand’s merchandising operations and culture. ??Macy’s welcomed students with a presentation led by Joanna Lee, supported by Alexandra Hoffman and Frances Boamah. Students explored opportunities at Macy’s and visual merchandising techniques used throughout the store. ??SPARC Group provided a detailed overview of the company’s functions and achievements presented by Bob Biel, Aimee Carroll, Kerri McGlynn, Hayley Carrasquillo, Nicole Connolly, Steve Lubomski, and Madison Davis, followed by a Q&A and a visit to the Aéropostale store. Retail Workshop Update: Opportunities ???? Last week, our students explored exciting career opportunities at The TJX Companies, Inc. and Gap. A big thank you to Emma Lefebvre and Chelsea D. for their invaluable insights into TJX’s business processes. They facilitated a merchandise buying exercise, in which students were able to evaluate products, honing their skills in pricing and quality assessment to attract shoppers. We’d also like to extend our gratitude to Sarah Sterling for sharing her expertise on Gap’s internship recruitment and offering advice for students looking to build their future with the brand. Lastly, many students attended the Meet the Recruiter event sponsored by us and Retail Studies Organization and spoke to the 22 recruiters during the Retail Industry Career Fair for Indiana University - Kelley School of Business and IU Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design. ?? Retail Workshop Indianapolis Trip ?? Last Friday, our students had the incredible opportunity to explore the retail industry in Indianapolis, visiting Homefield, Simon Property Group, Lids, and LYSSé NEW YORK. ?? Homefield Apparel kicked off our trip with a tour led by CEO Connor Hitchcock. He guided students through the buying and manufacturing processes, sharing valuable insights on marketing, trend research, and design. Lastly, he unveiled exciting upcoming college merchandise. ?? At Simon Property Group, students engaged in a discussion with the VP of Leasing Dennis Carafiol about the recent closure of Saks Fifth Avenue at Keystone Mall. They explored strategies to increase foot traffic for the new building plans and learned about effective property management practices. ?? SVP of Merchandising Paul Eusebio and Learning & Development Specialist Megan Armato spoke with students about opportunities at Lids. This was followed by a tour of their corporate office, informing students on marketing methods and merchandising processes. Students participated in a merchandise categorization activity with Buying Team members Makaela Addington, Chase Carnes, and Lily Wilcox to learn about pricing strategies. ??? Olivia Wagner, E-Commerce Associate at LYSSé NEW YORK, provided a tour of the warehouse, educating students on business operations and the brand’s marketing strategy. A big thank you to all of the companies for welcoming the Kelley Retail Workshop, and to Professor Dana Olsen for organizing this enriching experience. ???Retail Workshop Update: Teachings & Community??? This week’s class was an inspiring journey into the world of retail with Tailored Thrifts in Bloomington, Indiana! ??Retail Knowlege: Students had the privilege of hearing from the owner herself, Sierra Shambaugh, who shared valuable knowledge on sourcing second-hand merchandise, trend discovery, pricing strategies, and merchandising techniques. Her expertise highlighted the art and science behind curating a successful, sustainable retail experience. ??Community Discovery: To cap off our session, stundents participated in a scavenger hunt around Bloomington’s retail shops. It was a fantastic way to see firsthand the diverse merchandising techniques used across different stores. We loved getting connected with the Bloomington community. Industry Insights: Experienced merchant Nicole Gruber and HR professional Simone Goldberg from American Eagle Outfitters Inc. shared their in-depth knowledge about the company's values, work culture, and operational details. Students engaged with the professionals, asking insightful questions and gaining a deeper understanding of the brand. ?? Creative Project: Our students tackled an exciting project, predicting trend opportunities across AE Men’s, AE Women’s, and Aerie, applying their newfound knowledge in a real-world context. ?? Professional Guidance: Executive board members Gabbi Mak and Anna Banyard provided detailed advice on crafting standout resumes, writing effective cover letters, constructing networking emails, and mastering interview techniques.
