Congratulations on becoming a homeowner! Now that the paperwork is all done and the keys are in your hands, there are a few critical steps to take in the days and weeks after closing to ensure everything runs smoothly. Here are some things first-time homeowners should prioritize post-closing (Seasoned vets should also take a note): ?? Review Your Homeowners Insurance Ensure your policy provides adequate coverage and that you fully understand its details. This is your first line of defense in case of damage or loss. ?? Change Locks and Key Codes It’s a great idea to enhance your home’s security right away. Consider installing new locks and updating any key codes to safeguard your family. ?? Update Your Address Make sure to notify relevant institutions, such as banks, employers, government agencies, and anyone else that needs to know your new address. ?? Review Your Home Inspection Report This is a key document to carefully examine! Make sure you’re aware of any potential issues or maintenance needs that could require attention down the road. ?? Understand Your Mortgage Familiarize yourself with the specifics of your mortgage, such as the monthly payment amount, due dates, and payment methods. Understanding your mortgage terms is crucial for financial peace of mind. ?? Set Up Utilities: Contact utility companies and transfer services to your name so that you’re not left in the dark—literally! Make sure electricity, water, gas, and internet are all set up. ?? Budget for Home Maintenance: Owning a home comes with ongoing maintenance costs. Plan for routine upkeep, such as landscaping, appliance care, and unexpected repairs. ?? Consider Additional Security Measures: Looking to further protect your investment? Explore options like home security systems or smart home devices to keep your home safe and efficient. ?? Review Closing Documents: Take a second look at all the documents you signed during the closing process to ensure everything is in order and that you fully understand your rights and responsibilities as a homeowner. Although this should be done before you sign, doing it again afterward ensures your security behind this major decision. ?? Update Your Estate Plan: If applicable, make sure to update your trust, will, and power of attorney to reflect your new homeownership status. At Keepingly, we’re here to help you stay organized, manage maintenance, and stay on top of your homeownership journey every step of the way past closing. No matter where you are in your homeownership journey, we’re here to support you at every step! #HomeownershipJourney #NewHomeowners #PostClosingTips #HomeMaintenance #FirstTimeHomebuyers #HomeInsurance #Mortgage #HomeSecurity #HomeownerTips #Keepingly Check out this article from Fairway for more: https://lnkd.in/e7yUuKXP As always, if you haven't gotten your home’s best friend yet, go now! www.Keepingly.co

If owning a home with that classic white picket fence is your dream, understanding the housing market—like interest rates and home appreciation—is essential. While banks and independent mortgage brokers prioritize profits, achieving your dream can be more attainable with clearer information and better access to the right homeownership programs.

The phrase "The American Dream" is believed to have been first coined in 1931 during the Great Depression. "If you ask people from around the world what the 'American Dream' means to them, the answers will almost always revolve around the idea of upward social mobility, the classic success story, or the self-made man (though rarely the self-made woman). Many will think of the image of a house with a white picket fence—a symbol of financial security and independence. For others, it may represent the land of opportunity, particularly for immigrants." – Source: The Catalyst Like all things, ideas, sayings, and even technology evolve. So, I ask you: Is the American Dream of today the same as it was in the 1930s? And is it still attainable? My answer: Maybe. It depends on what your version of the American Dream is. We all have unique dreams for our lives, and America should help make those dreams possible. But does it work for you? Your dream might not involve a house and upward mobility—it could be the freedom to travel the world while working remotely. Or it might still align with the classic dream of climbing the corporate ladder, owning a home, retiring comfortably with a pension or 401(k), and spending your golden years in the sunshine. But if your dream is owning a home with that iconic white picket fence, then the dynamics of the housing market—interest rates, home appreciation, and more—become critical. Banks and Independent Mortgage Brokers (IMBs) are profit-driven. Still, America could help make your dream a reality through greater transparency and access to the right programs that make homeownership attainable. There are organizations built with the intent to help. When will all financial institutions (FIs) and IMBs truly embrace this mission? I don't know, but I hope it’s soon. ?? Where is the Outrage??? “They told me, ‘Don’t worry about it.’ Now I’m losing my home.” – Robin McElroy Robin McElroy's story is a heartbreaking reminder of the systemic barriers that continue to undermine Black homeownership in America. Despite owning her Chicago home outright since 2012 and paying her property taxes on time, a bureaucratic error led to her home being sold for “delinquent taxes.” ?? This isn’t just a one-off mistake—it’s a symptom of a broken system that disproportionately impacts Black homeowners. Consider this: ???? Black homeownership rates are among the lowest in the U.S., the result of decades of redlining , predatory lending ??, and inequitable policies ????♀?. ???? Systemic failures like Robin's case expose just how fragile Black homeownership can be—even when you “do everything right.” ???? The emotional and financial toll of losing a home due to negligence is immeasurable—and yet it happens far too often in marginalized communities. How Did We Get Here? ?? A clerical error swapped Robin's property ID with her neighbor’s, misapplying her tax payments. Even after this was flagged in 2019, the correction was never made. Fast forward to 2023—her home was sold at auction, and now she’s being told she owes rent to the buyer. This isn’t just about Robin. This is about the fragility of Black wealth in a system designed to strip it away. Why This Matters ?? ?? Homeownership is the cornerstone of generational wealth. When homes are lost, entire family legacies are disrupted. ?? The systemic failure to protect Black homeowners undermines trust and perpetuates the racial wealth gap. McElroy had to hire a lawyer to fight for her home. A spokesperson told CBS News Chicago the office is working with its legal team to resolve the matter For McElroy, the ordeal isn’t over until she sees it in writing. "You guys can point fingers all day long. I don't care," she told reporters. "I want what's rightfully owned to me.” "Her experience highlights an important lesson: Homeowners should keep detailed records of tax payments and correspondence and follow up on unresolved issues, even if reassured. Errors like these can lead to severe consequences, including late fees, interest and even the loss of a home." https://lnkd.in/g-Hu4uKW This is why Keepingly? is so critical to the Homeownership Journey and ensuring that the documentation around your largest asset is secure. Affirmation Sunday: Taking Action for Equity in Homeownership ?? $875 Billion Lost: The Black Homeownership Crisis Demands Urgent Action ?? Homeownership is more than a milestone—it’s a cornerstone for building generational wealth, stability, and opportunity. Yet, systemic inequities have stripped Black families of $875 billion in wealth since 2004, with Black homeownership rates declining from 49% to 45.7%, while White homeownership remains over 74%. At Keepingly? , we believe this is not just a statistic—it’s a call to action. Behind this crisis lie deep-rooted injustices: Appraisal Bias undervaluing homes in Black neighborhoods by 30%. Loan Disparities, where Black borrowers face rejection for affordable loans at twice the rate of White borrowers. Climate Change, which disproportionately impacts Black communities with higher risks of hurricanes, rising insurance premiums, and limited coverage. ?? This is more than numbers—it’s about families, legacies, and futures being erased. At Keepingly? , we’re fighting to close this gap by empowering homeowners to protect and grow their wealth with tools for transparency, fairness, and equity. We also call on leaders in housing and finance to join us in driving change. ?? Today’s Affirmation: "I am empowered to create generational wealth, protect my home, and demand equity in every step of my journey. My voice matters, my actions make a difference, and together, we will close the gaps that divide us." Let’s take this moment to affirm the power of homeownership as a tool for change. Together, we can advocate for transparency, fairness, and protection for every homeowner, ensuring no family is left behind. ??????
