One of our key strategic ambitions is to help Scotland become nature positive and restore biodiversity. We do this in many ways - inspiring action through our Climate Action Schools programme in classrooms across Scotland, by offering training to help people understand the challenges and actions that they can take to improve the situation, and we celebrate the work of people right across Scotland through our Climate and Nature Friendly Communities Network. Regularly we hear people commenting that litter is worse in Scotland than in other countries. While we know that we have a litter emergency, we also know that right now, we are making positive progress. Our Campaigns and Innovation Manager Heather McLaughlin was invited to speak at the first international #LitterCongress #Zwerfafvalcongres2024 last week on our journey showcasing our successes and learnings. Organised by Rijkswaterstaat and Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat the event brought people to Utrect to explore common challenges and solutions, to network and create future opportunities for cross-border collaboration. Heather McLaughlin shared information on Scotland’s National Litter and Flytipping Strategy and Marine Litter Strategy and our role as a charity helping deliver key outcomes, she highlighted our experiences campaigning on roadside litter and litter travelling from rivers to the sea through our Upstream Battle campaign and outlined what we are working on in 2024/25.? She also showcased the work of some of the amazing community groups who make up our Climate and Nature Friendly Communities Network. The take home was – all countries have issues with litter, and actually what we are doing in Scotland is pretty good – we even inspired other individuals in the room countries to start up and elongate their own annual spring clean events. If you are in Irvine over the next fortnight, you might hear our new #UpstreamBattle radio advert reminding you about the importance of stopping litter’s journey from source to sea. The bags of litter in the image below were collected during one Irvine riverside litter pick, just upstream from the Railway viaduct. One big, high tide and it could all have ended up in the sea. We are working with the Irvine Clean Up Crew, North Ayrshire Council and local businesses for our Upstream Battle Irvine intervention. To support our work in Irvine you could: ?? Last week our Education and Learning Officer Nicola visited Linlithgow Bridge PS to present their Eco-Committee with a certificate to celebrate their 10th Green Flag Award!
