?? It's FALL, y'all! It's time for sweater weather, pumpkin spice, and spooky habits! ?? But don't worry - we've collected easy tips from our favorite sources (linked below ??) on making your fall earth-friendly. ?? PUMPKINS! Whether you're carving a jack-o-lantern or stacking them on your front porch, at the end of the season, don't throw pumpkins in the trash! ? Each year, 1.3 billion pounds of pumpkins end up in landfills, where they rot and produce harmful methane. ?? You would need a patch the size of 65,606 football fields to grow that many pumpkins! Here's what you can do instead: ?? Compost! Pumpkins are rich in nutrients that will feed your garden in the spring! ?? Feed your animals - chickens, goats, cows - all love pumpkins. #FeedYourAnimals ?? Place them out of sight in your yard so wildlife can enjoy them, too! #WildlifeFriendly ??♀? COSTUMES AND DECORATIONS! Halloween is fun, but the amount of trash it generates is terrifying... ?? Don't want to be a zombie two years in a row? Donate or swap costumes to save money AND the planet! ??? Ditch the fake, stretchy webs - or use them inside only. They can trap and kill birds, bats, butterflies, and other pollinators. ?? ??? Buy only reusable decorations! Look for easy DIY ideas to turn thrift store finds into Adams Family decor must-haves! ?? LEAVES! To rake or not to rake... There are numerous benefits to leaving leaves where they fall. If you prefer a leaf-free lawn: ?? Mow the leaves into your lawn to keep some nutrients and organic matter. ?? Reserve a portion of your yard for leaf piles so beneficial bugs and pollinators can overwinter. ?? See you in the spring, fireflies! ?? Leaves and branches make fantastic fill for garden beds that will save you money on garden soil! You can pile them in thick layers in the existing beds to mulch perennials or line new beds before adding soil. ?? BONUS TIP: Layer leaves and discarded pumpkins in garden beds and cover them with a thin layer of soil - they will decompose over the winter! Your spring plants and earthworms will thank you! ?
