During Lent, Daisy resolved to pray. It wasn’t that she didn’t pray as it was. It was that her mind wandered when she tried. She would lean forward into the day, or her thoughts would fall back into some vital memory. Or she’d get twitchy and reach for her phone. This wasn’t how she wanted to be, so it was for all these reasons that she set out during her lunch hour toward a small church a few blocks from work. A sign she’d seen said their chapel was open from 12-1, and she thought such a place might focus her mind, to say nothing of her heart. In the courtyard just outside the chapel though, Daisy’s progress was arrested. Accustomed to more somber renditions of the Christ, the statue in the church’s courtyard conveyed something else entirely. The figure’s jaw was set. Deep lines of anxiety cut across His brow. In the eyes and in His bearing, Daisy detected an awesome courage. Such a man, she thought, might knowingly walk into death if it was for some great purpose. On this occasion, Daisy sat on a nearby bench, examined the statue further, then returned to work. The following day, again before reaching the chapel, through an open window in the courtyard, Daisy heard voices, a choir of young sopranos trained angelically, as best she could tell. The church apparently also ran a school for girls. Their voices lingered high, then ascended impossibly higher before falling in a chromatic fashion, settling into an intriguing dissonance, which at first Daisy thought might need correction, before realizing she’d just been advanced and educated in the peculiarities of beauty. Daisy stood in the courtyard listening for a full half hour before returning to work, feeling again somehow fortified. The next day, Daisy finally made it inside the chapel where the vivid color and fine craftsmanship of a small rose window at the front seemed to give her a new kind of vision—one of such definition and clarity that had she possessed it all the time, she might see forever. The light that poured through it was breathtaking. Rather than bow her head, Daisy simply admired it before heading back to work exhilarated. Read More: https://hubs.ly/Q03bbYtn0

As he exited the idling cab at his terminal, the wind swirled around Edwin Ray like a cattleman’s rope. It had started to sleet too, crystals accumulating on the hard pavement at his feet. With a raft of other travelers, their coats whipping, their umbrellas turning inside out, Edwin moved through the automatic doors, then scanned the bustling space, shaking his head. He’d expected long lines, but this would be brutal. His flight would be delayed, frozen rain would slush the tarmac, the de-icing equipment would be called in, planes would be loaded and unloaded, crews swapped out. He’d be lucky to get back home at all today. His frequent flyer status shortened the process of checking in, but then Edwin entered the slow-creeping security line behind a young mother with two pieces of luggage and two small children with large backpacks. The woman’s first carry-on looked heavy, but it was the smaller one that was the trouble. Cumbersome, roughly the size and shape of a snare drum, it looked as if it might contain an entire line of cosmetics or perhaps a preposterous hat. Edwin rolled his eyes as they finally reached the front as the woman’s kids were wholly unprepared. They both had water bottles in their backpacks, puffy jackets they couldn’t remove, and insisted on cheerily greeting every TSA agent they encountered. But this wasn’t what was most annoying. It was the mother’s serene attitude through the whole ordeal. She was moving them along but was being extraordinarily patient with them. She said nothing when her son took off his shoes, placing them in the bin, though this was totally unnecessary for an under-12-year-old traveler. Then an innocent fascination overtook both children as they watched the conveyor belt trudge through the X-ray machine, further delaying Edwin’s turn through the metal detector. The wheat grows alongside the tares. The wheat perseveres, Yet so do the tares. One clothed in gold, Producing glowing grace, The other, tangled suffering. They cover the fields of history And line the path of each mad dash, But the Owner knows the real estate: Take heart, This is a field of wheat, Not tares. #MondayOverCoffee
