    Why ROAS Isn’t Enough—And Why It’s OK If You Hate Math I get it—marketing isn’t finance, and for many marketers, math isn’t the most exciting part of the job. ROAS feels simple. It gives you a quick number to show your campaigns are "working." But here’s the problem: ROAS lies. It only tells part of the story. It says nothing about whether your campaigns are profitable, sustainable, or driving long-term value. And when you don’t have answers to these questions, your CFO starts to question whether marketing is worth the investment. Here’s the truth: you don’t have to be a financial wizard to tell a better story. Metrics like Net Present Value (NPV) might sound intimidating, but they’re just a way of answering the questions your CFO is already asking: Are we making money on this campaign? What’s the long-term impact of our spend? If you’ve ever felt the sting of a budget cut, it’s not because your work doesn’t matter—it’s because you’re not showing it in terms the business understands.     ROAS Is Killing Your Marketing Budget Let’s have an honest conversation: Your obsession with ROAS is why your budgets keep getting cut. ROAS might make you feel good in the short term, but here’s the hard truth: more often than not, it’s financially meaningless. It doesn’t account for profit. It ignores the lifetime value of your campaigns. And it often makes your CFO think marketing is a cost center, not a growth driver. If your campaigns aren’t profitable—and most high-ROAS campaigns aren’t—then your CFO is right to cut your budget. You’re equipping them with the proof they need: marketing isn’t delivering real value. If you want to stop this cycle, you need to stop chasing vanity metrics and start focusing on what really matters: profitability and long-term impact. Tomorrow, I’ll share the math and an example that proves this point. But for now, ask yourself: Are your campaigns truly profitable? Do you know their multi-year impact?
