关于我们
The KeelWorks Foundation is a 501(c)(3) approved nonprofit foundation dedicated to supporting upward mobility for everyone, but especially the economically disadvantaged. We support personal empowerment through peer supported leadership development, goal management, and mutual accountability. Our change model is based on the idea that together, we can do anything. Diversity, inclusiveness, emotional intelligence, and the power of community intelligence. Our program is under development, but even now we are supporting change through our intern program. Every program project is driven by students with education, but without the experience to qualify as a credible career candidate. We have coached hundreds of students and graduates in career skill application, coached resume development, and helped hundreds to meaningful employment. Since 2008, the foundation has operated with less than $1500 total funds. Expenses are paid by volunteers and corporate support. We benefit from software and systems support for systems and training development tools.

Five Common Resume Mistakes I have yet to see an effective resume from a recent graduate. Most are blindly following poor guidance. Most resumes are designed to tell what is important to the writer, instead of what is important to the reader. Here are the five most common mistakes: 1) Failure to anticipate the simplest reader questions, like "Do you want THIS job?" 2) Poor formatting; for example: using bold like a megaphone and offering lists in paragraph form. 3) Trumpeting your status as a student (hint: would a recent graduate your first hiring choice?). 4) Presenting information in an order that is inconsistent with reader priority (e.g., Education first). 5) Failing to explain in job bullets how you used the skills you claimed in your skills list.

Honesty is the first of the five core values we try to live at KeelWorks. The first requirement of honesty is transparency. Transparency means that KeelWorks operations and spending are open for all to see. Candid.org awarded us the gold level for transparency. We're committed to living our stated values. #honesty #transparency #trust #keelworks #nonprofit #employment

We honor and celebrate diversity. We believe that with diversity, we are more agile because we have greater perspective. Just as important as diversity is full inclusion. We believe that everyone can work, that there is a role for everyone, and that we all need to work. We are committed to an environment that welcomes everyone and where everyone feels valued. #diversity #inclusion #equality #keelworks #nonprofit #employment

?? Crummy Job of the Week Award goes to Insight Global for their EVS Director position in Burien, WA. The role offers $37/hr - $40/hr with on-site contract work. However, it raises questions - especially about the title and compensation structure. It's important to consider the mismatch when a company seeks a "Director" as a contract worker. Moreover, if the Director role pays less than regular field workers, it may signal a lack of appreciation or respect for the position (or they're just short on cash). #JobSearch #CareerInsights #LinkedInPost

Resume Guidance For those who are not part of the KeelWorks foundation, I am offering a session on how to fix your resume. There are several strategies that are the result of bad advice that gut resume effectiveness. I'll talk about how to design a resume to meet the use needs and your own needs. A list of advice commonly applied that undermines resume effectiveness includes the following. - Putting your education first. - Putting your skills last and in paragraph form. - Including your GPA. - Offering statistics showing effect. The session will explain what you should and shouldn't do on a resume and why. Employers are used to terrible resumes, so you will blow them away if you can be that exception. The first session is $25 and will occur on Thursday, September 12th at 5:00 pm, PDT. I will have follow-up sessions for reviewing revisions - those will be $10 each. Good resumes take time and iterations. Anyone interested should email me at [email protected]. If people would repost this to other groups, I would appreciate it.

Marketing/Sales/Lead Generation The foundation needs help for grant acquisition. This role needs someone with writing skills but also a head for sales. Our process involves talking to grant giving organizations and building the grant proposal. We will want someone who has some experience writing for sales or who can demonstrate the necessary skills. This person also needs to be able to research for grantors and to be able to find the right person at these organizations to open a dialogue.

HR Lead We need someone to take on leadership of the Foundation's HR department. There are about 15 members of this department. Some are assigned to onboarding, some develop policy and procedure, some are guiding others. The person in this position should have a degree in human resources and they should have some experience in the field. The ideal person has enough education and experience to warrant the role, but lacks the leadership experience. The incumbent will develop that experience here and parlay that into an HR lead role elsewhere. The time requirement is eight to ten hours a week, spread through the week (not all on a weekend).
