A Johnson County school propelled one of the Black community’s first fights for equal education in Kansas, and faculty and students at MidAmerica Nazarene University are now working to preserve that important history, thanks to a grant from Missouri Humanities . Emily Younker of the Kansas News Service has the story: https://lnkd.in/gHNFdYEB “This project will invite Kansans to learn more about local heritage and the important role Kansas played in the history of school desegregation,” said Julie Mulvihill, executive director of Humanities Kansas, in a statement. The Kansas News Service is a statewide collaborative journalism center, headquartered at KCUR and made possible with support from the Kansas Health Foundation.

The Midwest Newsroom's Kavahn Mansouri digs in to how a missed deadline to spend federal funds means that homeless students will lose out on services. https://lnkd.in/gGHevJhd Missouri made up the lion’s share of funds left to be spent in the four-state region, with roughly $6 million unspent of the $12.8 million granted by the rescue plan. More than 32,000 homeless students live in Missouri, according to federal education data. And with about 6,600 homeless students, Kansas reported $1.1 million of its $4.2 million remains. The NPR Midwest Newsroom, headquartered at KCUR, is a four-state partnership that provides investigative journalism and in-depth reporting. #education #homelessstudents #arpa #investigativejournalism #midwestnewsroom

Turtles are a beloved Midwestern creature, often taken for granted as they seem ubiquitous. But Harvest Public Media's Elizabeth Rembert of Nebraska Public Media tells us how drought, disease and habitat loss are combining to threaten not just turtles, but many other species. https://lnkd.in/gpEBdgBP She interviewed experts Larkin Powell of University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Molly Woloszyn of NOAA National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS), Nate Bowersock of Missouri Department of Conservation, Wynne Moss of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and Scott White of Klamath Drainage District about what they've learned, and what may be able to help. #turtles #wildlife #climate #drought #disease #habitat #harvestpublicmedia #conservation #pollinators #insects #midwest
