When should reporters say what they think? Lots of journalists are breaking out of the old charade of pretending we don't have opinions or thoughts about the story we're working on. But whether to do that or not -- it's not an easy decision. In fact, the choice is often really fraught and personal. On today's "Question Everything", I talk to investigative reporter Dana Ballout, who was all set to include her personal take in her recent series for Canadaland, "The Copernic Affair," and then, nearing the final hour, decided against it. And cut that part from the series. We talk about what was cut and the implications for the story, and for her personally. It all prompts me to revisit a story -- and a co-reporter -- of my own. When it comes to journalism, where is the line? When do journalists cross it? On this episode of Question Everything, Brian Reed tells the story of a reporting trip he took to Alabama, which led to one of the most honest - and surprising - conversations about journalism he’s had in a long time. Today is Protect My Public Media Day — a national day of action to celebrate and defend public media. Public media stations, including KCRW, are among the few remaining locally operated media organizations. As part of the nationwide NPR network, we are dedicated to strengthening our communities through independent reporting, emergency coverage, and bringing people together. Federal funding and support are foundational to public media, and represent about 5% of KCRW’s annual budget. There are strong signals coming out of Washington, D.C. that the future of public media will be at stake over the coming months. Take action today! Sign the Protect My Public Media Day Pledge now to urge lawmakers to preserve vital federal funding and receive more information on other ways to advocate for public media. https://lnkd.in/efVAWq9e NPR | PBS

And The Award Goes To...The Circuit Court Of The Nineteenth Judicial Circuit in and for Okeechobee County, Florida! On this week's "Question Everything", for awards season: Ben Smith of SEMAFOR tells me the story of the strange journalism award controversy that's been going down in the Florida courts. Just yesterday, the stakes of this case were upped dramatically -- and frighteningly -- when a judge used a decision in the case to argue that the Supreme Court decided Times v Sullivan incorrectly in 1964. The judge quotes the term “FAKE NEWS” – all caps – in the ruling. There is a growing movement on the right to challenge Times v Sullivan, and get it overturned, similar to the way Roe v Wade was overturned. If that were to happen, it would make it much easier for public officials to win defamation suits against journalists. It’d be a devastating decision for journalism. In the last day this awards case has been thrust into that movement.
