Did you know? - 158,000 or 19% of KC metro households do not have a desktop or laptop. - 12% of the devices requested by nonprofits were able to be funded during a 2024 grants from the KC Digital Inclusion Fund. We have much work to do, and why we are so grateful to i.c.stars |* Kansas City for leading the way in helping to keep old devices out of landfills, and give them a second life for someone who needs one!
For my KC network: Do you have old tech collecting dust in your bottom drawer? ?? ?? ???? ?? Old cell phone that you can't sell? ?? Laptop you used to mine Bitcoin with? ?? Maybe that iPad mini you won in a drawing that only had like 10 gigs? Bring them to me! i.c.stars |* Kansas City has partnered today with our friends at KC Digital Drive and Maggali Salinas at Electromundo. Your old device can be donated, after which Electromundo will scrub the data, and repurpose that device to donate to someone else who lacks tech connectivity. Where: 1111 Main St, KCMO in the Skyline Lobby When: TODAY, 7:30am - 6pm

A regional research ecosystem like we have in Kansas City can elevate the region’s competitiveness, fuel entrepreneurship, and raise the efficacy and accessibility of degree attainment. Growth in research dollars and activities are a foundation for economic growth; it facilitates systematic workforce supply and demand and creates the necessary conditions for economic mobility. Since 2012, KC Digital Drive has been the civic organization leading the region’s digital evolution, specifically addressing digital needs across broadband, connectivity, and adoption alongside emerging tech innovation. KC Digital Drive, in partnership with KU, K-State and UMKC, is happy to share that the Regional University Research Collective (RURC) project is one of six to receive a planning grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, to explore how to collaboratively approach the Greater Kansas City research ecosystem as a whole, with a focus on community engagement and commercialization. When so much of the work we do is the kind of invisible work that happens outside the public eye, we welcome the opportunity to highlight this vision for a future state of the region with the KC community, and hope that you’ll follow along as we lean in to this planning stage. More information will be coming soon, but in the meantime, if you’re interested in learning more about the RURC, send us a DM. https://lnkd.in/e_cd3TeG Photo: (L to R) Kari Keefe, Jim Starcev, Patricia Bergman (KU), Aaron Deacon, Anthony Caruso (UMKC), Richard Kim (Kauffman). ?? Did you know... ?? US households pay more on their cable bill than they do all other utilities combined – totaling $2,600+/year? ? $1,600/year is wasted on channels most people never even watch? ?? Switching to streaming can save households $137.42/month – or a whopping $3,200 over two years? These statistics are just the tip of the iceberg for the financial possibilities of going "beyond cable" – or "cutting the cord", as most of us call it. Last week, I had the pleasure of introducing residents to these possibilities at my Beyond Cable workshop, part of an all-day event co-organized with my awesome American Connection Corps colleagues at Tech2Elevate. Together, we educated participants on practical and cost-effective ways of transitioning to streaming services – empowering them with more choice and freedom in their entertainment experience. ??? Hosting this event on #MLKDayOfService made it even more meaningful. For AmeriCorps members, service is at the heart of our mission, and I felt privileged to spend this federal holiday honoring Dr. King's legacy by equipping residents with tools for digital equity. ?? Big shoutout to my ACC colleagues at KC Digital Drive, past and present, for inspiring this workshop through one of their open-source Creative Commons licenses. Your work continues to make waves nationwide! #MLKDay2025 #DigitalInclusion Lead For America Neighborhood Allies

CES 2025 exceeded my expectations! Many people I’ve talked to have been surprised because they don’t think of CES as being a conference with a focus on digital health. #CES2025 actually featured an entire digital health content track + a staggering 750+ digital health exhibitors. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of start-ups that were featured on the exhibition floor and in digital health sessions. I anticipated seeing the heavy hitters, but I was happy to see so many small companies get the main stage treatment. A couple of highlights: the Digital Health Mixer was awesome! There were several hundred people in attendance and conversations continued long after the event was technically over. Our KS group received an in-depth look at Panasonic's new tech innovations, including the batteries planned for production at their Kansas City region facility. Additionally, Garmin, showcased new wearables, including a new HRM 200 heart rate monitor. Special shoutout to: KC Digital Drive, Aaron Deacon, Kansas City Area Development Council, Samantha (Pinkal) Jefferson, KC Tech Council, Kara Lowe, Erin Christensen, Overland Park Chamber of Commerce, Libbey Tucker, Independence Chamber of Commerce, Tom Lesnak, Kansas Department of Commerce, Peter Ruiz, Stinson LLP, Steve Cosentino, #CES2025

Great work! Congrats to our own Britt Shanklin as well!
My digital certificate from the University of Nicosia's Institute For the Future (IFF) just arrived. The topics covered in this MOOC are part of their MSc in Blockchain and Digital Currency, the world's first and leading graduate program focused on blockchain and digital assets. As a founding member of the KC Futures DAO the content was essential and serves as a solid foundational base to learn about blockchain technologies, decentralized digital currencies, the metaverse, and Web3. My thanks to Armantos Katsioloudes, Hazal A. and KC Digital Drive for helping us bring this amazing educational resource to the Kansas City Community! As a reminder in my earlier posts, you can enroll for free in the Spring cohort starting February 10th, 2025. If you do well enough, you can also be awarded a scholarship for their MSc degree. #kansascity #global #defi #blockchain #web3 #metaverse #universityofnicosia #future

The Digital Divide Simulation can be a great tool to boost awareness and leverage collective impact around digital inclusion and digital equity. Thanks for the shout out, Amanda Bergson-Shilcock! Interested in bringing the DDS to your community? Click here: https://lnkd.in/gFdTA7Zj
Brilliant hands-on exercise helps people experience what the digital divide is like for others. Love this innovative work from KC Digital Drive in Kansas City! As Leslie Scott says: "Inspired by the poverty simulation so many of us have participated in, the Divide Divide Simulation is a “day-in-the-life” interactive and immersive experience for participants to see and understand the real-life challenges faced by everyday people living on the wrong side of the digital divide." Kudos Leslie and team! Watch the 3-minute video: https://lnkd.in/eGA64QzS Learn more about the simulation and how you can host your own event: https://lnkd.in/ezz9YuqD
