Bringing the community on-farm, hands-on to grow tomorrow better than today.

关于我们

KC Farm School, a fourteen-acre peri-urban farm in southern Wyandotte County, brings individuals on-farm, hands-on connecting them to land and soil, food, community and opportunity. We grow diversified vegetables regeneratively on two acres through no-till practice, operate a 6000 sf community greenhouse, and offer education to people of all ages, ancestries, and abilities. Our on-farm farmers market brings our neighbors to the farm and provides opportunities for other local producers to meet their customers. We run a 40-member CSA, belong to the producer-owned KC Food Hub, and maintain relationships with several local restaurants. We offer educational opportunities for everyone beginning at age 4, through Ag Explorers, Jr. Growers, Youth Farm Apprenticeships, Growing Growers Apprenticeships, adult workshops, and for volunteers. Our lending library is stocked with meaningful books on agriculture for adults and children, about biodynamic agriculture, agroecology, circular economy, sustainability, beekeeping, native plants, and more. All our food and our educational programming are always pay-what-you're able because we know that (and now have three years of operational proof) when we all share what we have, we all have what we need. We are in the process of discerning our interaction with newly-acquired eleven acres of raw, rolling land to the east. We believe we will grow more food and share the space with our community. We call this land Common Ground. We see the farm at the center of its community generating an inspiring environment transforming the individual and society through community-wide, multi-generational, participatory, and collaborative food projects while it provides vocational training, job opportunities, healing, and fun. We believe action is the solution and we step forward each day growing food, holding space, and providing opportunity for others to join in and share their ideas and the work.

Co-Founder and Executive Director at KC Farm School at Gibbs Road

For many years now, I've been fortunate enough to care for a magnificent structure known as the Quell-Davis Community Greenhouse. This greenhouse is the center of our work at KC Farm School at Gibbs Road and it's the center of our community; it's where our season starts, it's where food sprouts, and it's the place where people from all over the world come together with one goal- to grow food. We share this greenhouse with twenty other market growers. We share the space, they share the cost of utilities, and we all get what we need. The farmers that use our space move their plant starts back to their farms, grow them out, and take to farmers markets all over #KansasCity including Brookside Farmers' Market, Overland Park Farmers Market, Parkville Farmers Market, Liberty Farmers Market, Merriam Farmers' Market, The City Market - Kansas City, Ophelia's Blue Vine, and some even sell at our own market on Wednesdays. We grow our own plant starts for our farm, we grow plants for other market growers, we grow some to sell to home gardeners, and we grow thousands to give away to our Let's Grow Wyandotte members growing in their backyards. We host field trips in the greenhouse. We host workshops. We host yoga and jumble swaps, we cure our garlic and our sweet potatoes there, we host our fall farmers markets inside, it's awesome event space, staff uses it for overflow meeting space, and we store everything you could think we might during the off-season. This greenhouse deserves some love. It's 40 years old and most of it is original. If you haven't seen it, please come visit! We've recently been awarded $10K from Kubota Tractor Corporation to rehab the greenhouse. We're so excited! Even better, we're up to turn that $10K into $50,000 but WE NEED YOUR HELP. Would you take a minute TODAY (and maybe EVERY DAY through August 14) to vote for us to win? Here's the link- https://lnkd.in/gFrstu2s If we win the $50K, then we'll revamp our heating and irrigation systems, add shadecloth, replace the walls, and install a hydroponic learning station. Thank you for voting. We appreciate it so much. #goodgrowsatgibbs #growingcommonground #greenhouse #onfarmhandson #actionisthesolution

KC F.A.R.M.E.R.S. Coalition's second Work and Learn is here! FARM BUSINESS: Start-Up Essentials Monday, January 22, 6-8 pm at The Toolbox: Small Business Resource Center This work-and-learn session has been designed by business professionals specifically for farm business operators (growers!) and will cover the first several steps of starting a farm business including securing a business license, registering with the Secretary of State, the IRS, the Department of Revenue, Department of Agriculture, developing a business plan, tax preparation, payroll tax, insurance, banking, gaining legal advice, creating service agreements, branding, invoicing all while making the process easy to understand and approachable. This training session is the first of four farm business training sessions we are designing. The other training topics will focus on taxes, financial projections, and marketing. Stay tuned. Each of our work and learn sessions has a hands-on component so the participant can have tactile learning experiences while sometimes lending a hand to the host farm. All this is aimed at creating muscle memory and building community. This reciprocal and relational model has proven successful for millennia and is practiced at our farm. We're excited to share that the hands-on portion of this training session is creating-your-own informational binder that will eventually contain all the learning and resources provided by this farmer-led coalition. We invite you to join the KC F.AR.M.E.R.S. Coalition and attend the FREE event. Learn more on our website. https://lnkd.in/gn4cUh-H If you have questions about the coalition or these work-and-learn sessions, please reach out to anyone on our team including Kansas City Black Urban Growers - KCBUGs Moose Paw Farm The Garden at Dogwood Forest Pearl Family Farm Grasshopper Urban Farm Sankara Farm The Toolbox: Small Business Resource Center We're also hiring a coordinator of this program.
