Our DOC BAND event is an annual initiative dedicated to inspiring the next generation of medical professionals since 2008. Students took a trip to Kaweah Health Hospital for hands-on lab sessions, getting a real look at the medical field in action. The event wrapped up with a special dinner and Q&A session, where students connected with medical professionals and gained valuable insights into their future careers.?#VUSDforward

This week, we gave students a hands-on tour of our cutting-edge simulation lab, exploring what a career in healthcare could look like. As part of our partnership with Visalia Unified School District and Central Valley Christian Schools, students learned how to intubate a patient, deliver a baby, stop a bleed, understand ultrasounds, and use NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation) in physical therapy to restore muscle function after injury or surgery. After playing professional basketball, coaching, and making it into five Hall of Fames, going to the gym is more than a habit. At 96, Gene Smith is a testament to the power of staying active, engaged, and connected. A member of Kaweah Health Lifestyle Fitness Center for 27 years, Gene is a well-known figure at the gym, where he and his wife, Bess, work out five times a week. After avoiding spinal surgery for years due to painful recovery memories, Melodie Furtado finally found relief. For over a decade, she struggled with arthritis and leg pain, making everyday tasks difficult. Not only was she unable to play with her 19 grandchildren, but her quality of life was far from where she wanted it to be. When the pain became unbearable, she turned to Dr. Mathias Daniels at Kaweah Health. Rather than rushing into surgery, Dr. Daniels took a proactive approach, ensuring surgery would be the last resort. When the time came, Melodie’s recovery was quicker and smoother than she had ever imagined. She was walking the same day and back to working from home just days later. Her journey didn’t end there. Two years ago, her husband survived a major heart attack at Kaweah Health. Today, both are healthier, enjoying their grandchildren’s baseball games, and living life to the fullest again.
