New idea for a lab bonding activity: Dress Like Your Principal Investigator Day.??? The team at Economo Lab, led by Michael Economo, chose a fun theme for their work wear as they research how learning happens in the brain. Dr. Economo and his colleague Yao Chen won a Scialog (Research Corporation for Science Advancement) Collaborative Innovation Award at the start of the year to study the molecular pathways through which synapses are altered in the brain as animals learn. A healthy work environment and culture can lead to greater diversity in science. Director of The Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Discovery, University of Oxford Carol Robinson shared: “Many believe that if you are not in the lab until 10 p.m. or 2 a.m., then you’re really not working hard enough … I feel that’s undue pressure, and a lot of the reason why women typically give up science. They take on other roles in life that are not compatible with that type of schedule.” Removing these workplace culture barriers makes work better for everyone. To celebrate 20 years of The Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, director Abigail Vieregg talked up past successes (including the Dark Energy Survey and the South Pole Telescope) and new opportunities, including RNO-G (Radio Neutrino Observatory Greenland), which is under construction and will use hardware built at UChicago, and PUEO (Payload for Ultrahigh Energy Observations), which is set to launch next year aboard a balloon that will fly over Antarctica. https://ow.ly/gBPo50U4zpR
