Another great win.
A great ruling for our class members -- incarcerated people who were denied access to an early-release program because of their mental health disorders. The court granted our class summary judgment, holding DOCCS liable as a matter of law. https://lnkd.in/gd-C-XCv

We are thrilled that our case against private security contractor AGS, which runs an immigration detention center in upstate New York, can move forward. The Northern District court denied AGS's motion to dismiss in full, finding that ICE was not a necessary party. Read the thorough opinion at the link below.

KLLF Notes -- Anniversary Edition Dear Friends, Family, and Colleagues, It is hard to believe that we opened our (then-virtual) doors four years ago. In April 2020, in the middle of unprecedented global uncertainty, we could barely dream to be where we are now, having worked with hundreds of clients, recovered?millions of dollars in damages, hired?four employees, and secured our own permanent?blue-walled office. We feel so lucky to be able to do challenging, invigorating work that makes a difference to real people, and to do that work on our own terms. We could not have gotten here without the support of (and referrals from) so many of you. So on our fourth anniversary, we want to thank you for all the ways you have helped?KLLF?thrive. Since our last missive, we have welcomed a new associate to the team.?Kyla Magun?honed her skills as an associate at Kaplan Hecker & Fink, where she focused on gender discrimination and sexual and physical abuse cases.?We’re thrilled to have her with us! We have also sued the Smithtown Central School District for allegedly subjecting a child to?years of bullying and harassment?from students and staff for his gender presentation. Our client, Michael Coppola,?eloquently described?the bullying he faced to CBS News. With this case,?KLLF?continues to grow our?educational discrimination?practice. KLLF?is also representing a developmentally disabled woman who alleges that she suffered years of physical and verbal abuse by staff at the privately operated Queens group home where she has lived since 2017. The suit charges that the operator of the residence, Independent Living Association, Inc., failed to protect S.B. from?years of systemic abuse and neglect. We are honored to be fighting for justice for her. We hope to see you all before our next anniversary! Toward Justice. Together. Alanna, Doug, David, and Ali

Very proud of David Lebowitz for his dedicated work representing vulnerable youth, especially queer youth. Michael Coppola, who was relentlessly bullied across Smithtown schools because of his gender expression and identity, is bravely fighting for justice, and we are thrilled to join him in that fight.
