Today we remember a battle fought in 1943 on the Bismarck Sea by the Royal Australian Air Force. In February 1943, Allied intelligence intercepted signals indicating the Japanese military was planning to send a convoy of troops across the Bismarck Sea to reinforce their lines in New Guinea. By the beginning of March, a combined US-Australian force of 154 fighters, 34 light bombers, 41 medium bombers and 39 heavy bombers had been assembled. On 3 March 1943, the convoy was spotted in the Huon Gulf, heading towards Lae. RAAF Beaufighters of No 30 Squadron led an attack, followed by a mix of US bombers and other strike aircraft, including A-20 Bostons of the RAAF’s No 22 Squadron. Japanese transports were sunk, along with half the convoy escort. The Battle of the Bismarck Sea was an Allied victory, a defining battle that prevented Japanese forces gaining a permanent foothold in Australia’s nearest neighbour and one of the most impressive displays of air power in the Pacific during the Second World War. Thirteen US and RAAF aircrew lost their lives and eight airmen were wounded. Today, we acknowledge their service and sacrifice.
