Today, all of us at Karis Care Services celebrate Juneteenth, a holiday that is relatively new in the minds of some but a long-standing and significant day of remembrance for many others. Originally known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, or Jubilee Day, this newest Federal holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, TX, learned that they were free. Although President Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation over six months earlier, on January 1, it took several months for the news to make it as far as Galveston. I can’t begin to imagine what it must have felt like to be told, finally, that you were recognized as a whole person with rights of your own and that you were now free! Even though the deliverance had been signed into law earlier, true freedom only came with hearing and fully comprehending the news.? Today, we invite you to join us as we stand in solidarity with our African American brothers and sisters as we celebrate Juneteenth. This observance serves as a powerful reminder of our shared humanity and the need to strive for a world where our differences in appearance hold no sway over our perceptions and interactions. We are all human beings, created in the image of God, who sees our true hearts, not just our outward appearance. On this day, let us all yearn for and cherish true freedom, not just for ourselves, but for every individual, every day.
