The Central US was a battleground for three clashing air masses this past weekend. Lingering cold air from the north, warm humid air from the southeast, and hot dry air from the southwest met over the Great Plains, spurring intense atmospheric activity. On the cold side, winter storm conditions expanded across the northern half of the country and brought 40+ mph winds to Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. While the cold front moved across the country, the cold air clashed with warm, humid air streaming in from the Gulf, leading to widespread severe convective storm activity that extended from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes. Behind the cold front, hot dry air streamed in from the southwest, plunging humidity into the teens and bringing 60 mph winds, which fanned wildfires that ignited across Oklahoma. Through advanced physical modeling techniques, KCC’s second generation winter storm, SCS, and wildfire models capture all of the impacts of these complicated springtime systems and keep you informed on which perils are winning the insured loss battle. Get real-time updates and access high-resolution intensity footprints and losses with KCC’s LiveEvent service. For more information contact us at [email protected].

Mike Tine, Senior Technical Director at KCC, recently participated in a dynamic wildfire panel at the London CAT Risk Management & Modelling Summit. The panel explored the far-reaching impacts of the recent Los Angeles wildfires, delving into how they will shape the future of mitigation efforts, catastrophe modeling, and risk management strategies. With wildfire risk rapidly evolving, discussions like these highlight the critical need for advanced, scientifically rigorous models—like those from KCC—that provide the insurance industry with the most accurate insights.

KCC WINTER STORM EVENT BRIEF A multifaceted storm—named Lola by The Weather Channel—tracked across the country from March 2 through March 6. The strong extratropical cyclone produced blizzard conditions on its cold side and severe thunderstorms on its warm side while tracking from Colorado to Quebec. Winds near Lola's center produced blizzard conditions in portions of the Upper Midwest on March 5. Meanwhile, the interaction between the cyclone and a potent high-pressure system produced 50+ mph winds across the Plains, with some gusts that reached hurricane force.? ? KCC WINTER STORM EVENT BRIEF From February 17 to 22, an Arctic air outbreak and a snow and ice-producing winter storm—named Kingston by The Weather Channel—impacted a wide swath of the country, with impacts that stretched from Texas to the Mid-Atlantic. The majority of the damage was caused by the persistent freezing temperatures, with many reports of burst pipes throughout north-central Texas. However, Kingston also produced significant snow accumulations across coastal Virginia and became one of the top-ten snowstorms in Roanoke, VA since records began there around 1900.
