Our name Kapé-Kapé alludes to birds and butterflies' flight in the Pemón language; freedom is inherent in their natural state. Indeed, it is the freedom for self-determination, respect for ancestral values, respect for the environment, protection against abuse, and peaceful co-existence under fair conditions that we fight and stand for. Indigenous peoples have been exposed to elements of violence and abuse by state and non-state actors. Criminal groups, as well as environmental predators, among others, have taken advantage of a lack of support and policies to protect Indigenous peoples and their lands. The difficult political situation in Venezuela, deeply violent and divisive, has exacerbated the above-mentioned issues, making Indigenous peoples one of Venezuela's most vulnerable groups. Particularly, Indigenous peoples have been suffering physical and environmental consequences from all legal and illegal mining activities in the Amazon, Bolivar State, and Delta Amacuro - not to mention the recurrent and increasing assassinations. This panorama drives us to focus on topics such as the defense of democracy, citizenry freedom, and human rights for Indigenous peoples.
