When you live in a rural community, you learn to be scrappy. As Dr. Michelle Schoon with Cowley College said yesterday, "This is something that doesn't happen across the state very often. We're one of the first to have a partnership like this." It makes my heart happy to see collaboration at work at the organization where I choose to spend my days.
The Winfield Healthcare Center was buzzing with excitement on Thursday as Southwestern College, Cowley College, and Butler Community College came together for a ribbon cutting with the Winfield Area Chamber of Commerce for the new William Newton Hospital Simulation Center. "To see all of the support here today from the community really helps to solidify what we're doing here and the goal for us to be able to expand the nursing programs as well as the rural workforce in Winfield, Cowley County, and the south Central market,” said Brian Barta, CPA, WNH CEO. "Hopefully, this can be an example for healthcare throughout the state and for those across the nation." Thank you to Keenan Penn II and KWCH 12 for stopping by our campus and helping tell our story: https://lnkd.in/g8MHyRAQ #nursing #nurseeducation #healthcare

Sometimes the most effective learning comes from your peers. A panel on Strengthening Health Care Governance allowed representatives from mid-size and smaller hospitals to exchange ideas on how they address quality and patient care, workforce, advocacy and community engagement. Thank you to panelists Shari Matekja Quick with LMH Health, Mike Bassett with Kearny County Hospital, Tara Overmiller with Phillips County Health System and Benjamin Anderson with Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.

Board and governance best practices are key to leadership. Identifying postive disruption versus negative disruption is the difference between forward momentum and stagnation. Karma Bass with Via Healthcare Consulting shared how board leaders can navigate this tricky situation during the Critical Issues Summit.

Thank you to Yazmin Wood, Sarah Johnson and Margaret Grismer for a wonderful interactive presentation at today’s Critical Issues Summit. They highlighted a Kansas county struggling with various social determinants of health including poverty, education and others. They are using those data points to raise awareness in their community and drive change. Well done!
