??In my element?? I found my community in Downtown Phoenix Inc. at the Downtown Phoenix Farmers Market. Every Saturday, a crowd lines up for some fresh espresso and pour over coffee from Kanfuela Kaffé, mainly sourced from D.R. Congo and roasted by moi. It has been a WILD ride but pure joy to see customers' pleasant surprise when they discover the flavorful coffee from Congo and Tanzania that we offer, especially when they become regulars! The growth in 2024 has been amazing! What does KANFUELA mean? Another common question. Contrary to popular belief, Kanfuela isn't my last name! ?? KANFUELA means COFFEE in Tshiluba, a bantu language spoken in the Democratic Republic of Congo! ???? I chose the name KANFUELA because I felt a connection to it and wanted to keep the word "alive," as many people (even from Congo) do not even know it. Years ago, I was having early morning coffee with my dad and my aunt (his oldest sister), while in Congo. Happy to learn that I also drank coffee like everyone in the family, my aunt asked Dad in Tshiluba: "Ohh, she also loves "Kanfuela!?" And there it was. KANFUELA. It was my first time hearing it, but I knew it was "THE ONE."

I am often asked if the woman on the logo is me. And it really has me questioning: does she really look like me? The woman on the logo is most definitely not me. However, she represents the African woman (working in coffee): The African woman working in coffee farms, cultivating coffee. The African woman exporting green coffee. The African woman roasting coffee. The African woman owning a coffee shop or roastery. The African woman as a representation of coffee. For decades, women were (and still are) the minority in leadership roles in the coffee industry. Why is that?
