A commemorative plaque was dedicated this week at the Gates Vascular Institute to the late Dr. L. Nelson “Nick” Hopkins. Known as the father of endovascular neurosurgery, Dr. Hopkins founded the Jacobs Institute and Gates Vascular Institute, bringing expert minds together to study, treat and develop innovative approaches to vascular and neurological diseases. The Canon global office in Japan, with whom Dr. Hopkins had a close working relationship, created the plaque to sit between two previously gifted Daruma dolls to honor his memory; the dolls symbolize perseverance, resilience, and the ability to overcome challenges.?Teams from Kaleida Health, University at Buffalo Neurosurgery (UBNS) and the The Jacobs Institute were on-hand to celebrate the unveiling.

Congratulations Dr. Talal on your 2025 Top Ten Clinical Research Achievement Award from the Clinical Research Forum!

Congratulations to Andrew Talal, MD, MPH! A novel approach that he and colleagues developed to cure hepatitis C virus in people with opioid use disorder — using facilitated telemedicine — is being honored with a 2025 Top Ten Clinical Research Achievement Award from the Clinical Research Forum! Talal, principal investigator, is a professor of medicine in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo, a physician with UBMD Internal Medicine and attending physician at Buffalo General Medical Center. The Top Ten Clinical Research Achievement Awards honor groundbreaking achievements in clinical research from across the nation. The competition seeks to identify major advances in the biomedical field resulting from the nation’s investment in health and welfare. The work was supported by an $8.2 million award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) and more than $3 million from the Troup Fund of the Kaleida Health foundation. It was published in JAMA. ?? See how the study demonstrated that the use of facilitated telemedicine was far superior to in-person referral, which is the standard of care used throughout the country for treating hepatitis C: https://ms.spr.ly/6047UAKrD #UBuffalo #PCORI #OpioidUseDisorder #JAMA #FacilitatedTelemedicine #Telemedicine #HepatitisC #HCV
