When a group of healthcare workers raised concerns about the safety of babies at a subsidized housing complex, NowKalamazoo and WMUK began to investigate. We found companies and governments that say they’re doing what they can — and a continuation of questionable living conditions. This is the first story in a new reporting collaboration with WMUK-FM exploring Kalamazoo County’s housing crisis. Reported by Jessi Phillips and photographed by Zac Clark. • The New York Times recently published a poignant article that sheds light on the escalating homelessness crisis in Kalamazoo, a city grappling with the complexities of poverty, affordable housing shortages, and systemic inequities. At Kalamazoo Housing Advocates, our work is driven by a deep commitment to the most vulnerable among the unhoused and the unstably housed. We believe that housing is a fundamental human right and that everyone deserves a safe, stable place to call home. The people we serve are not just statistics; they are our neighbors, friends, and fellow community members who have been caught in a cycle of hardship and disadvantage. Many of them are dealing with the compounded effects of trauma, mental health challenges, and economic instability—factors that make escaping homelessness incredibly difficult without targeted, compassionate support. Our mission is to break this cycle by providing holistic, personalized services that address not only the immediate need for housing but also the underlying issues that perpetuate homelessness. By offering long-term support, we help our clients regain their footing, rebuild their lives, and ultimately achieve housing stability. The New York Times article underscores the urgency of this work, highlighting that without sustained intervention, the crisis will continue to grow, leaving more people vulnerable to the devastating impacts of homelessness. We are dedicated to being part of the solution. We work for the most vulnerable because we believe that no one should be left behind. Every person deserves dignity, respect, and the opportunity to thrive. Our approach is not just about providing shelter but about empowering individuals and families to reclaim their lives and secure a brighter future. The challenges are immense, but with the right support and resources, we know that change is possible. https://lnkd.in/gyua7Yea
