Disparities in Overdose Deaths: A Call to Action In Minnesota, the impact of substance use disorder (SUD) isn’t felt equally. ?? In 2021, American Indian Minnesotans were 10x more likely to die from a drug overdose than white Minnesotans. Black Minnesotans were more than 3x as likely. This is more than just a statistic—it’s a stark reality that demands our attention. Systemic barriers, lack of access to culturally competent care, and social determinants of health all play a role in these devastating disparities. At Kai Shin Clinic, we have always stood with the underdog—those who are often overlooked or underserved. Many of our patients rely on Medicaid or face major obstacles in accessing care, but that should never be a barrier to getting help. This data reinforces our commitment to serving the communities that need it most.
