    In January 2019, I flew into Sacramento for a new consulting gig, not realizing it would change the trajectory of my career. That first night, I snapped a photo of the Tower Bridge—just a visitor in a new city, unaware of how much this project, and the people I’d meet, would come to mean to me. For the past six years, I’ve seen firsthand the relentless challenges Community College IT teams face: ?? I’ve watched dedicated professionals fight to keep students safe and teachers teaching—with too few resources and too many threats. ?? I’ve sat on the phone with friends, feeling helpless as they were held hostage and extorted by ransomware gangs. ?? I’ve seen brilliant ideas drown in bureaucracy—only to be saved by sheer determination on the ground. ?? I even saw an email I dashed off on a Friday afternoon get written into California law (true story!) Somewhere along the way, I realized: This is my place. These are my people. I grew up with a single mom pulling 12-hour shifts at the hospital. By the time my classmates were playing high school sports, I was already four years into the workforce. When they left for big-name universities, I was scrubbing toilets to pay for classes at my local community college. My story isn’t unique. It’s the story of millions of community college students—hardworking, determined, creating our own opportunities. So when I see underfunded, overworked teams fighting to keep students learning and teachers teaching—while being asked to do more with less—I take it personally. It's like Captain America says: I don’t like bullies. I don’t care where they’re from. This is all a long-winded way to say—I’m excited to see my people in a few weeks at CISOA.     We are thrilled to announce that Makenzie Cross, our amazing Youth Co-Lab Leader, has been appointed by Governor Newsom to the California Behavioral Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission (BHSOAC)! ???? Since joining KAI Partners in February 2024, Makenzie has been an incredible asset to the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI), bringing valuable insights and a wealth of experience in behavioral health services and early intervention. This appointment is a major step forward in bridging youth-led initiatives with state-level behavioral health oversight, ensuring that youth voices are heard in the transformation of California's behavioral health system. ??? ? Makenzie brings a strong background in biological sciences from UC Merced and direct service experience from her roles at Alta California Regional Center and the Center for Social Dynamics. Her dual position as a Youth Co-Lab Leader and BHSOAC Commissioner will help strengthen the connection between youth perspectives and behavioral health policy implementation. ?
